ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Carleton College women's tennis team continued its hot start to the 2022-23 campaign with a 9-0 triumph over Bethel University.
Amelia Asfaw (So./Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep),
Mary Frances Hose (Jr./Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge),
Mariam Nechiporuk (So./Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego), and
Ingrid Smith (So./Edina, Minn./Edina) each won in both singles and doubles as the Knights improved to 13-0 on the season and 5-0 in the MIAC.
The Knights swept doubles enroute to handing Bethel (11-2, 3-1 MIAC) its first conference setback of the year.
Asfaw and Hose prevailed 8-6 atop the lineup for the duo's sixth consecutive victory. Nechiporuk and Smith improved to 7-0 as a pairing this season with their 8-3 win at the No. 2 slot.
Alise Pedersen (Sr./San Anselmo, Calif./The Branson School) and
Amanda Black (So./Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) cruised to an 8-0 result at No. 3 doubles, the tandem's third straight triumph.
In singles, Carleton quickly claimed the two results needed to secure the team victory but then kept going and earned the sweep. Asfaw and Nechiporuk won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, respectively. The latter moved to 9-0 in singles play this season.
Miriam Shteyman (So./Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) added a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, while
Zoe Rose (So./Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) improved to a team-best 11-0 this season with her 6-2, 6-0 triumph at the No. 6 slot.
Hose dropped the opening set of her match but battled back to prevail 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8) and remain undefeated at No. 2 singles. At No. 5 singles, Smith won a tight first set 7-6 (7-5) before pulling away in the second set, 6-1, to improve to 4-0 in MIAC singles matches.
