Baltimore’s Annie E. Casey Foundation announced Lisa Hamilton will be its next CEO and president on Thursday.

Effective Jan. 1, Hamilton will succeed current CEO Patrick McCarthy, who is retiring.

Hamilton joined the philanthropic foundation in 2011 as vice president of external affairs, where her focus was on data, policy advocacy, communications and leadership development.

“For nearly eight years, I’ve been able to help change the odds for young people all over the country,” Hamilton said in a statement.

Though progress had been made, she said more needed to be done to bring opportunities to children and their families, “particularly those who have been denied opportunity for generations.”

Hamilton worked at UPS for 14 years before joining the foundation. Originally from Atlanta, she received her bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Virginia and a law degree from the University of Michigan.

In statement, Michael Eskew, chair of the foundation’s board of trustees, praised Hamilton’s ability to use research and data to advance the organization’s goals.
