Oregon Historical Quarterly

The Quarterly welcomes articles and essays about the history of Oregon and the historical Oregon Country, including manuscripts dealing with history and historiography, folklore, art, literature, sociology, anthropology, and scientific fields. OHQ works to amplify the knowledge and perspectives of people whom government policies, historical institutions, and academic practices have previously silenced. OHQ also encourages submissions that engage new scholarly perspectives and approaches to all relevant subjects, even ones that have been widely explored in the past. OHQ welcomes submissions from established scholars and graduate students as well as knowledge-holders who do not have conventional academic backgrounds. Manuscripts are judged solely on their suitability for the Quarterly, as determined by the editor and peer reviewers. OHQ especially encourages submissions that integrate perspectives about and from peoples who have been marginalized by previous scholarship.

OHQ seeks manuscripts that offer scholarly analysis of the past, drawing on a mix of both secondary and primary sources. All manuscripts published in OHQ should make a case for historical significance, while full-length research articles make more complex arguments that are in conversation with the work of other historians and scholars. OHQ asks authors to attend to context, particularly regarding issues of race, class, gender, and place, and urges those whose work focuses on a history of the dominant culture to go beyond acknowledging exclusion by incorporating diverse perspectives into their work. OHQ requires appropriate recognition of Indigenous relationships to places under study by its authors.

OHQ’s editors review all submissions to determine their appropriateness for the journal. Manuscripts undergo a double-masked peer-review process, where experts in the field read the manuscript and make recommendations about publication and revision. Based on the peer-review reports, OHQ’s editors determine whether the manuscript will be accepted for publication once any revisions are made to address referee comments. All manuscripts accepted for publication go through OHQ’s standard editorial process, which may include developmental editing and copy editing to correct for grammar and clarity as well as to conform to the Quarterly’s style. Authors may submit articles for consideration directly to OHQ’s editor; electronic submissions via email are preferred. Before submission, prospective authors are encouraged to read Submit an Article for publication requirements and matters of style. Once they have submitted a manuscript, authors can expect to receive a reply within about two weeks. OHQ’s editors will guide authors throughout the review process.

The Oregon Historical Quarterly is a peer-reviewed journal, and the length of the process depends on what revisions peer reviewers and editors determine are necessary as well as what other manuscripts are already scheduled for publication.
