Adjunct Professor Kristina Gjerde

Professor Kristina Gjerde won The Visionary Award in the 2018 Ocean Awards presented by luxury boating publication Boat International. Professor Gjerde is an adjunct faculty member with the Institute’s International Environmental Policy program.

The award write-up cites Gjerde’s work with the Sargasso Sea Alliance, which she co-founded in 2010, to “ensure legal protection for fragile ecosystems and provide insight to aid the establishment of other Marine Protected Areas.” The award judges also cited Gjerde’s roles as a professor at the Middlebury Institute and as senior high seas adviser to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Global Marine.

Gjerde says that “What excites me about being a professor at MIIS is the opportunity to teach the next generation of ocean leaders based on my twenty-plus years of experience as a lawyer and an ocean advocate. I am attracted by the inter-disciplinary nature of the programs and the international outlook of the faculty and student body.”
