Pre-Engineering Program at UWM
A carefully designed, first-year program will help you establish the foundation you need to successfully earn your engineering degree at UWM.
This invitation-only program helps foster academic success from the start. Bringing together a group of likeminded students creates opportunities for an inclusive and tight-knit community, with smaller class sizes and a support system of faculty, students, mentors and academic advisors.
Program Benefits
- Tuition savings: You’ll save almost 35% on your first-year tuition and fees, which is like getting a $3,000 scholarship.
- Smaller class sizes: Pre-Engineering courses are capped at 30 students.
- Supportive and inclusive community: Learn and study with your Pre-Engineering classmates, who will be enrolled in many of the same courses as you.
- Enhanced, dedicated teaching support and academic advising provides Pre-Engineering students with resources and tools to support their success.
Academic Coursework and Support
Students in Pre-Engineering have worked hard to reach this point. We’re investing in them because we have confidence in their ability to succeed academically.
Pre-Engineering students are admitted into UWM’s College of General Studies at the associate level, on the UWM main campus. They benefit from dedicated faculty and focused support. They are assigned a College of Engineering & Applied Science academic advisor and career services support, from the start.
Upon successfully completing the one-year Pre-Engineering program, students are admitted to the College of Engineering & Applied Science, to complete their bachelor’s degrees.
Tuition and Scholarships
Tuition
By being admitted through the College of General Studies, your tuition is less than two-thirds the cost of UWM’s College of Engineering & Applied Science tuition. Pre-Engineering tuition and segregated fees for Wisconsin residents for the 2021-22 academic year are approximately $3,134.46 per semester for a full-time students. Scholarships
We strongly encourage all students to submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This is the first step needed to determine your eligibility for state and federal financial aid. Funds are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Students in Pre-Engineering have full access to all resources and opportunities on the UWM main campus, including university housing and the Engineering Living and Learning Community.

Application and Admission
There is no application for this program. Interested prospective college students should apply to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and indicate their interest in the College of Engineering & Applied Science, including their desired major.
The College of Engineering & Applied Science team works with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to identify ideal candidates for the program. Eligible students will be notified as part of their admission to UWM.
