Campus Listening - 2024

room 8 ECHOES

Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States

This soundwalk was created collaboratively by 24 environmental engagers, while they were students in the Colorado College course MU277/EV277 Environment and Sound (block 2, 2024, instructor: Dr. Iddo Aharony).

Each team of creators engaged a different location on campus, exploring both its soundscape and different themes/ideas that stemmed from that location within the intersection of environment and sound. The resulting eight pieces merge field recordings and narration into unique audio essay/compositions, to be experienced at these different locations.

This project incorporates field recordings from the mountains of Colorado, alongside recordings of the vibrations produced by Starr Kempf’s kinetic sculptures at the Ent Center for the Arts, in Colorado Springs. An archival interview with Kempf reveals his belief in the subjective interpretation of artworks, a concept that has been central to my recent work. Interview with Starr Kempf, taken from David Holt’s State of Music. Used with permission.
