In November 2000, Viktor Schreckengost was presented with the first Viktor Schreckengost Teaching Award, established in his honor by CIA’s former president David Deming. This award is to be presented to current and/or former faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Art in recognition of teaching excellence at the Institute over a period of at least 10 years. The award may not necessarily be given every year, but there may also be two awards made in the same year, one to a current and one to a former faculty member.

The Schreckengost Teaching Award Committee reviews the nominations to select winner(s) for the 2019/2020 academic year. Awardees will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:

  • A record of teaching excellence
  • Accomplishment in service to students beyond the environment of the classroom (i.e., mentoring, grants in support of student learning, establishment and support of internships, etc.)
  • A distinguished professional record that serves as a model of a working artist for students

The award comes in the form of a 3” diameter bronze medallion designed by former President David Deming, and includes a portrait of Viktor with “Cleveland Institute of Art” embossed around the perimeter at the top and “Viktor Schreckengost Award” along the bottom.  Along with the medallion, awardees from the current faculty will receive a $5,000 check.  Awardees who no longer teach at CIA will receive the medal.  All awardees will be added to the plaque outside of the Academic Affairs office.  In addition, they will be recognized at Commencement.

Nominations should be accompanied by a brief rationale and/or testimonial in support of the nominee, describing their critical effect on the nominator’s professional life or on the lives of the students in their charge.

Please submit your nomination by February 20, 2020.
