VIDEO: Meet Concert Violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF's Fiddler

Along with the blaring burlesque trumpet that climaxes GYPSY's overture, the soft and hesitant sound of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF's opening fiddle solo that leads into Tevye's introduction of the people of Anatevka is among Broadway's most famous and beloved orchestral moments.

On stage at the current hit Broadway revival, dancer Jesse Kovarsky appears as the title character, but while he has learned the physicality needed to realistically portray the symbolic musician, it's concert violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins who caresses the ears from the orchestra pit.

In a special profile with NBC's Harry Smith, Hall-Tompkins explains the unseen communication that exists between her and the actors at every performance and her unique emotional connection to the piece via her friendship with a late concert violinist who was a Holocaust survivor.

The original Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, which opened in 1964, was the first musical in history to surpass 3,000 performances. The show won the 1965 Tony Award for Best Musical in addition to eight other Tony Awards that year. This acclaimed revival proudly introduces a new generation to the iconic musical adored across the globe.
