We heard great things about
Ed Charles from his work at Calabasas and Arroyo Seco. When he
became Head Pro and Manager under Owner / Director of Tennis
Steve Dawson at the Bobby Riggs Tennis Club in Encinitas, California
(San Diego North County), we decided it's time to write about
him. |
|
Ed Charles moved from his home
country India to Culver City, California, at age 15. Started
playing tennis a year later and played for Culver City High School
at 17. After high school he played for Pierce College and for
Cal State Northridge.
Ed has been a United States Professional
Tennis Association Elite Professional for over 30 years. He has
taught all levels of players from 3-year-old beginners to touring
professionals.
Competing throughout his teaching
career, Ed ranked nationally in the Top 20 in the 45's and 50's
and was a Two-time All America at Cal State Northridge in NCAA
Division 2.
Before joining Bobby Riggs Tennis
Club, Ed taught at busy Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center (California),
Louisville Tennis Club (Kentuck) and most recently at iTennis
Arroyo Seco in South Pasadena (California).
His coaching successes include:

The Bobby Riggs Tennis Club is
a seven hard courts facility located in beautiful Encinitas,
California, just East of I-5 at 875 Santa Fe Drive, dedicated
to Bobby Riggs, a former World #1 ranked player, renowned gambler
and "male chauvinist" in the famous 1973 tennis match
"Battle of the Sexes" with Billie Jean King.
Ed Charles says there is a huge
buzz about the club right now. "We have about a hundred
members and growing steadily." Renovations at the parking
lot, the museum and the rest rooms were completed recently. Next
month all tennis courts are re-surfaced (with an added 1/2"
slab to fortify courts against earth movements) and next year
the club will switch to LED court lights. Pickleball is big at
the Bobby Riggs Tennis Club, as well. |
In 1988 Bobby Riggs founded the
"Bobby Riggs Tennis Museum Foundation" for medical
research into prostate cancer. The museum is located at the Bobby
Riggs Tennis Club in Encinitas California and recounts his career
and more generally the history of tennis and includes 3 of Bobby
Riggs' US Open trophies as well as his Wimbledon Championship
Trophy.
In addition to Bobby Riggs, the
museum houses exhibits of Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova,
Margaret Court, Jack Kramer, Pancho Gonzalez, and Pancho Segura.
|
The museum was inaugurated in 1996,
one year after his death and is open daily to the public. |
