Gisela Alarcón
Subsecretaria de Redes Asistenciales, Ministerio de Salud

Dr. Gisela Alarcón is a medical doctor trained in internal medicine and hematology at Universidad de Chile. She also holds master’s degree in management and public policy from Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez. Dr. Alarcón has more than 30 years of experience in the health sector’s clinical, strategic, and academic areas. Previously, she worked at Universidad de Chile as both clinical director and director of the School of Medicine. She has also worked in institutional, private and public health organizations with an emphasis on the management of health teams. Dr. Alarcón has been subsecretaria de redes asistenciales at Chile’s Ministerio de Salud since February 2016.

María Begoña Yarza
Director, Hospital Dr. Exequiel González Cortés

Dr. María Begoña Yarza is director of the Hospital Dr. Exequiel González Cortés, a doctor of medicine at Universidad de La Habana, and a surgeon and specialist pediatrician at Universidad de Chile. She received a master's in public health and doctorate in health science at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain. She also received her diploma in management FEDRA from the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez.

Previously, Dr. Yarza was in charge of the Assistance Process Unit of the Department of Hospitals of the Chilean Ministry of Health (2009), and director of the South of Chile Health Services (2010). She also served as deputy medical director of the San Borja Arriarán Health Complex (2004 - 2008). She was a professor of pediatrics at Universidad de Chile (1995-2008), and since 2009 has been a professor of public health and visiting professor of pediatrics at Universidad Diego Portales.

Dimitris Bertsimas
Boeing Leaders for Global Operations Professor of Management; Professor of Operations Research, MIT Sloan;
Co-Director, Operations Research Center at MIT

Prof. Dimitris Bertsimas is the Boeing Leaders for Global Operations Professor of Management, a professor of operations research, and the co-director of the Operations Research Center at MIT. A faculty member since 1988, his research interests include optimization, stochastic systems, machine learning, and their application.  In recent years, he has worked in robust optimization, statistics, healthcare, and finance. Bertsimas was a co-founder of Dynamic Ideas, LLC, which developed portfolio management tools for asset management. In 2002, the assets of Dynamic Ideas were sold to American Express. He is also the founder of Dynamic Ideas Press, a publisher of scientific books.

Bertsimas has co-authored more than 150 scientific papers and several books. He is currently department editor of Optimization for Management Science and former area editor of Operations Research in Financial Engineering. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, he has received numerous research awards, including the Farkas Prize (2008), the Erlang Prize (1996), the SIAM Prize in Optimization (1996), the Bodossaki Prize (1998), and the Presidential Young Investigator Award (1991–1996).

Bertsimas holds a BS in electrical engineering and computer science from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, as well as an MS in operations research and a PhD in applied mathematics and operations research from MIT.

Erwin Buckel
Chief Medical Director, Clínica Las Condes

Dr. Erwin Buckel is the chief medical director at Clínica Las Condes. Throughout his career, he has generated relevant and encouraging work in the public health system, especially with the implementation of transplant programs in hospitals. He developed a multi-sector network that expands people’s access to transplant surgeries. Additionally, he pioneered medical milestones in Chile, such as the first liver transplant in a pediatric patient, first liver reduction for human transplantation, first concurrent kidney-pancreas transplantation and, therefore, the first multi-organ transplant, all of which took place in 1994.

His professional work with interdisciplinary teams oriented towards generating a culture and management of transplants in Chile has been accompanied by numerous scientific publications and teaching. He did his fellowship in digestive surgery at the Mayo Clinic (June 1990 to June 1991), as well as specialist training in transplant surgery, sponsored by the American Society of Transplantation Surgery (July 1991 to July 1993).

Domingo Castillo
Medical Director, Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile

Dr. Castillo is a medical surgeon with a specialty in internal medicine and geriatrics. He is currently head of the Geriatrics Section, deputy director of the Department of Internal Medicine and member of the Ethics Committee of the Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile. Dr. Castillo is also assistant professor of the Facultad de Medicina.

His areas of expertise are general geriatrics, gait disorders, bioethics, management of delirium, geriatric syndromes and medical anthropology. In his academic curriculum, Dr. Castillo has also received certificates in bioethics from the Facultad de Medicina and a certificate in the Program of Development for Executives in the High Management of Hospitals (PADE) of the School of Public Health of Universidad de Chile.

Miguel Cendoroglo
Superintendent, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein
Associate Professor, Universidade Federal de São Paulo
Adjunct Professor of Medicine, Tufts University

Dr. Miguel Cendoroglo has served as superintendent at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in São Paulo since 2010. Previously, he was the director of medical practice between 2003-2009.

As part of a collaboration between the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein and Insper, Dr. Cendoroglo teaches the MBA course Health Services Management. He is also an active collaborator in several associations including Sociedade Brasileira de Nefrologia and Sociedade de Nefrologia do Estado de São Paulo. His academic interests include research in renal failure, dialysis, hospital management, quality in health services, georeferencing in health, clinical body management, and health economics.

Dr. Cendoroglo received his master''s (1992) and PhD (Nephrology, 1993) from Universidade Federal de São Paulo. He completed his postdoc at Tufts University New England Medical Center, and the Advancement Management Program at Harvard Business School (2011). 

Andrés Couve
Full Professor, Physiology and Biophysics Program, Faculty of Medicine;
Director, Millenium Institute of Biomedical Neuroscience (BNI), Universidad de Chile

Prof. Andrés Couve is a full professor of the physiology and biophysics program at Universidad de Chile. He is also director of the Millenium Institute of Biomedical Neuroscience (BNI).

His research focuses on the activity of the nervous system, neuronal activity in particular. Prior to joining Universidad de Chile as an assistant professor in 2005, Couve was an investigator at Centro de Estudios Científicos in Valdivia, Chile. Before that, he served as a research assistant in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

He has been actively involved in national committees such as the Chilean Society for Cell Biology where he served as both vice-president (2013-2015) and president (2015-2017), and the Presidential Committee for the Development of Science, Technology and Innovation (2015).

Couve completed his BSc in biological sciences at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, his PhD in cell biology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, and his post-doc at MRC/LMCB, University College London.

Joseph Doyle
Erwin H. Schell Professor of Management; Professor of Applied Economics, MIT Sloan

Prof. Joseph Doyle is the Erwin H. Schell Professor of Management and a professor of applied economics at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

He conducts empirical research using microeconomic theory and modern empirical methods to answer policy questions, particularly in child welfare and health. Doyle studies the effects of foster care and other interventions on child outcomes, the returns on healthcare spending, and the role of health insurance on treatment provided to patients and health outcomes.

Doyle holds a BS from Cornell University and a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago.

Steffen Härtel
Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine;

Director, National Center on Health Information Systems (CENS), Universidad de Chile

Prof. Steffen Härtel was born in Frankfurt (Ger) and studied physics at the University
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Frankfurt, Ger), at the Universidad de Córdoba (Arg),
at the Universidad Austral de Chile (Valdivia, Chile), and at the University of Bremen
(Ger).

Since 2006, Härtel has led the Laboratory of Scientific Image Processing (SCIAN-Lab) at the Faculty of Medicine at Universidad de Chile. He is currently a member of the
Biomedical Neuroscience Institute (BNI) (funded by the Millennium Science Initiative
in 2011), sub-director for investigation of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences
(ICBM), founder of CEDAI SpA, director of the first Chilean Center for Digital Pathology
(CPDAI), and director of the recently formed Center for Medical Informatics and
Telemedicine (CIMT). He was also recently appointed director of the newly launched National Center on Health Information Systems (CENS), composed of academics and professionals from Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad de Talca, Universidad de Valparaíso, and Universidad de Concepción.

David Jaimovich
Chief Medical Officer, Everis Americas

Dr. David G. Jaimovich, M.D is the chief medical officer of Everis Americas. He is also the founder and president of Quality Resources International, an international healthcare consultancy working with healthcare systems, government agencies, and global pharmaceutical companies on four continents. Dr. Jaimovich oversees program and business development, provides coaching and mentoring to senior executive hospital leadership, and utilizes an extensive network of business and professional relationships to build synergy among clients. Additionally, he serves as a member of the Everis ehCOS International Clinical Advisory Board.

Formerly, Dr. Jaimovich served as the chief medical officer and vice president for international accreditation services for Joint Commission Resources (JCR) and Joint Commission International (JCI).

A sought-after speaker, Dr. Jaimovich has presented at hundreds of national and international conferences on such topics as performance improvement, accreditation operations, standards development and disaster preparedness. He has published numerous books, chapters and original articles in peer reviewed journals.

Alejandro Jofré
Director, Center for Mathematical Modeling, Universidad de Chile

Prof. Alejandro Jofré is director of the Center for Mathematical Modeling at Universidad de Chile. He obtained the degree of doctor and habilitation in applied mathematics in France, and later postdoc at University of California. He held appointments as professor at the University of Paris 1-Sorbonne and University of California-Davis, and as visiting professor at several universities and centers, including Ecole Polytechnique, Princeton, University of Washington-Seattle, UC Davis, UBC-Vancouver, Johns Hopkins, HP-Palo Alto, Bonn, and NUS-Singapore.

Jofré's research works cover the areas of stochastic optimization, game theory, economic equilibrium, electricity markets, big data algorithms and logistics, mining, and human-technology interactions. He has advised more than 20 PhD and masters theses. He has led more than 30 research projects and developed optimization tools for pricing, planning, market behavior analysis for energy systems, telecommunication markets, and sustainable exploitation of natural resources such as copper, energy, and forestry. Jofré is currently a member of the Council of the Mathematical Optimization Society and a member of the scientific board of three research centers/initiatives of excellence in France, Japan, and Ecuador. He is associate editor of six mainstream journals and member of the societies SIAM, Mathematical Optimization, Econometric, IEEE, and Economic Theory.

Marcelo Larraguibel

Advisory Council Member, MIT Sloan Latin America Office

Marcelo Larraguibel is one of the founders and senior partners of Virtus Partners, a top management consulting firm created in 2007, with operations in Santiago, Lima, and Bogotá. He has more than 25 years of experience as a top management consultant and was previously a director at McKinsey & Company where he worked for 18 years, both in Europe and Latin America.

Larraguibel has extensive experience leading the development and implementation of high-impact change processes: organizational transformations, profound cultural changes, changes in corporate governance, and redefining business models.

Larraguibel received his SM from the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is also a member of the MIT Sloan Latin America Office Advisory Council.

Retsef Levi
J. Spencer Standish (1945) Professor of Management; Professor of Operations Management;
Co-Director of Leaders of Global Operations Program, MIT Sloan

Prof. Retsef Levi is the J. Spencer Standish (1945) Professor of Management and a professor of operations management at the MIT Sloan School of Management. In addition, Levi is the co-director of the Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) Program at MIT Sloan.

Levi’s current research is focused on the design and performance analysis of efficient algorithms for fundamental stochastic and deterministic optimization models that arise in the context of supply chains, revenue management, logistics, and healthcare. He is also interested in stochastic and combinatorial optimization and mathematical programming in their broad definition, especially in their intersection with problems that arise in the context of real-life applications. Levi is affiliated with MIT’s Master of Science Program in Computation for Design and Optimization.

He was born in Tel-Aviv, Israel, and served for approximately 12 years as an officer in the Israeli Defense Forces. In 2005, he received the Goldstine Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematical Sciences awarded by the Mathematical Sciences Department at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York.

Levi holds a BS in mathematics from Tel-Aviv University and a PhD in operations research from Cornell University.

Marcelo Olivares
Assistant Professor, Industrial Engineering, School of Engineering, Universidad de Chile
Adjunct Professor, Columbia Business School

Prof. Marcelo Olivares is an assistant professor of industrial engineering at Universidad de Chile and an adjunct professor at Columbia University Business School. His research focuses in empirical work in various areas of operations management, including service operations management, supply chain management, and retail. He has worked in collaboration with big-box retail chains in the U.S. and Latin America, a network of U.S. hospitals, IBM and the Chilean Ministry of Education, and Chile’s central procurement office (ChileCompra).

Olivares teaches undergraduate and MBA classes in statistics and operations management at Universidad de Chile. At Columbia University Business School, he teaches PhD classes and the elective applied statistics and data analysis for the masters in management science & engineering.

He has a PhD in operations management and MA in statistics from the Wharton School (2007). He did his undergraduate in industrial engineering at Universidad de Chile.

Thomas Payne
Medical Director of IT Services, UW Medicine
Professor of Medicine; Adjunct Professor, Departments of Health Services and Biomedical Informatics & Medical Education, University of Washington

Dr. Thomas Payne has been the medical director of UW Medicine IT Services since 2000, and is professor of medicine, and adjunct professor in health services and biomedical informatics & medical education. He is attending physician in medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. Prior to his current position, he led the installation of the Veterans Administration CPRS Electronic Medical Record at VA Puget Sound in Seattle for which VA Puget Sound was awarded the 2000 Nicholas E. Davies CPR Recognition Award. He has been elected twice to the Board of Directors and is now board chair of the American Medical Informatics Association. He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) and served as the Chair of the AMIA EHR-2020 Task Force. He is the author of over 70 articles in the field, and edits a "Operating Clinical Computing Systems in a Medical Center", now in its second edition. His research interests include natural language processing and electronic documentation in EHRs.

Dr. Payne attended Stanford University, the University of Washington School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado, and completed a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Harvard Medical Informatics Fellowship program. He is board certified in internal medicine and clinical informatics.

Rosalind Picard
Professor of Media Arts and Sciences, MIT Media Lab; Co-Director, Advancing Wellbeing Initiative;
Faculty Chair, MIT Mind+Hand+Heart

Prof. Rosalind Picard is founder and director of the Affective Computing research group at the MIT Media Lab, co-director of the Lab's Advancing Wellbeing Initiative, and faculty chair of MIT's Mind+Hand+Heart Initiative. She has co-founded Empatica, Inc., which creates wearable sensors and analytics to improve health, and Affectiva, Inc., which delivers technology to help measure and communicate emotion.

Picard holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with highest honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and master's and doctorate degrees, both in electrical engineering and computer science, from MIT. She started her career as a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories designing VLSI chips for digital signal processing and developing new algorithms for image compression. In 1991, she joined the MIT Media Lab faculty.

Picard became internationally renowned for constructing mathematical models that achieved content-based retrieval of images and for pioneering methods of automated search and annotation in digital video, including the creation of the Photobook system. The year before she was up for tenure she took a risk and published the book Affective Computing, which became instrumental in starting a new field by that name. Today that field has its own journal, international conference, and professional society. Picard also served as a founding member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Wearable Information Systems in 1998, helping launch the field of wearable computing.

Roberto Rigobon
Society of Sloan Fellows Professor of Management; Professor of Applied Economics, MIT Sloan

Prof. Roberto Rigobon is the Society of Sloan Fellows Professor of Management and a professor of applied economics at MIT Sloan. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a member of the Census Bureau’s Scientific Advisory Committee, and a visiting professor at IESA.

Rigobon is a Venezuelan economist whose areas of research are international economics, monetary economics, and development economics. He focuses on the causes of balance-of-payments crises, financial crises, and the propagation of them across countries—the phenomenon that has been identified in the literature as contagion. Currently he studies properties of international pricing practices, trying to produce alternative measures of inflation. He is one of the two founding members of the Billion Prices Project, and a co-founder of PriceStats.

Eduardo Tobar
Associate Professor, Department of Internal Medicine North, Hospital Clínico Universidad de Chile

Dr. Eduardo Tobar is a specialist in internal medicine and critical care medicine. He has been an academic at the university hospital since 2001. His research interests include the use of analgesics and sedatives, and the management of delirium in critically ill patients. He has led various competitive projects, such as the Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FONDECYT) and others for the National Fund for Research and Development in Health (FONIS), both funded by the Chilean National Research Council (CONICYT).

He is currently director of the project "Software-guided cognitive stimulation prevents the development of delirium in the hospitalized elderly adult", from the Science and Technology Development Fund (FONDEF), which associates health and engineering disciplines.

During his career at Universidad de Chile, Dr. Tobar has held managerial roles in the Emergency Department of the hospital and is currently the academic director of the Facultad de Medicina, a function from which he has generated spaces for integration and collaboration between professionals in engineering, biomedical sciences, and the clinic, all of which are aimed at improving healthcare and academic services.

Juan Velásquez
Associate Professor, Industrial Engineering Department, Universidad de Chile

Dr. Juan D. Velásquez is an associate professor at the Industrial Engineering Department at Universidad de Chile. During his academic life, he has been adviser for more than 100 reports and theses (master and doctorate), has written more than 100 scientific publications and book chapters, and has authored four books. He has been a visiting professor at the Computing Laboratory, University of Oxford, UK; at the Center for Collaborative Research, University of Tokyo, Japan; and the VSB Ostrava Technical University, Czech Republic, in addition to being a guest lecturer in more than 10 countries.

Over the last seven years, Dr. Velásquez has been involved in projects related to health analytics, focusing on how to process massive amounts of data originating in medical exams and support medical decisions about patient diagnosis.

Currently,  Dr. Velásquez serves as the head of teaching unit in the Universidad de Chile's Department of Industrial Engineering.
