Governor DeSantis Announces Miami Area Unemployment Rate Reaches 1.7  Percent

Miami, Fla. —Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the Miami area unemployment rate reached 1.7 percent in October 2022, down 2.1 percentage points over the year. The Miami area also led the state in private sector job growth and had the fastest private sector job growth rate over the year in October 2022, with an increase of 75,500 jobs, up 7.1 percent over the year. The Miami area labor force increased by 12,574 in October 2022, up 1.0 percentage point over the year.

The industries gaining the most jobs over the year were trade, transportation, and utilities; increasing by 24,000 jobs; leisure and hospitality increasing by 15,300 jobs; education and health services, increasing by 10,800 jobs; and professional and business services, increasing by 10,400 jobs.  The Miami area led all metro areas in job gains over the year in trade, transportation, and utilities.

Governor Ron DeSantis also announced that Florida surpassed pre-pandemic employment levels in all nine major private sector industries and created jobs for the 30^th consecutive month in October 2022. Over the month, Florida’s labor force grew 0.3 percent (+36,000) while the national labor force shrank, and Florida’s private sector employment grew by 0.4 percent over the month (+35,000 jobs), doubling the national growth rate of 0.2 percent.

Florida’s statewide unemployment rate was 2.7 percent in October 2022, an increase of 0.2 percentage point over the month but 1.0 percentage point lower than the national rate of 3.7 percent. Florida’s statewide unemployment rate has been lower than the national rate for 23 consecutive months since December 2020.
