Private School, Public Purpose

Andover has long served as a resource for students and as a partner to educators nationally and worldwide, from Outward Bound and A Better Chance to (MS)², IRT, PALS, and Andover Bread Loaf. Building on this history, we prepare our graduates for active and ethical civic engagement.

Andover Bread Loaf

Andover Bread Loaf teaches, inspires, and empowers student writers of all ages and works with public and private school teachers to enhance the teaching and learning of writing. Workshops—typically held at Phillips Academy or in nearby Lawrence, Mass.—have served as catalysts for educational renewal in countless classrooms, schools, and communities in the United States and abroad.

Institute for Recruitment of Teachers

By assisting talented college students in the graduate school application process and helping to locate scholarship opportunities, the IRT seeks to bring more diversity to the nation’s teaching faculties. Of the approximately 130 IRT fellows chosen each year, 30 participate in an intense summer program on the Phillips Academy campus.

Mathematics & Science for Minority Students

A three-summer residential program held on the Phillips Academy campus, (MS)2 provides math and science enrichment as well as college counseling for academically talented high school students of color who have a demonstrated financial need (e.g., first generation and low income). This competitive and rigorous program is free of charge for the thirty-six 9th-grade scholars selected each year.

PALS

Founded in 1988, PALS is an academic enrichment and high school preparation program for students from the city of Lawrence, Massachusetts. PALS, which stands for Phillips Academy and Lawrence Schools, brings up to 40 middle schoolers to the Andover campus for a free, five-week program each summer.
