Habitat for Humanity Neighborhood Revitalization Workday

April 27, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Habitat for Humanity builds strength, security and self-reliance through homeownership. Join a team on the next St. Luke’s Build Day to help build and revitalize homes in East Winter Garden.

It’s an exciting time for West Orange Habitat for Humanity as they have just completed four homes and are beginning the next set of three homes in East Winter Garden. Families have been selected for these homes and are anxious to work alongside you, our volunteers, to build their own home and homes of others. Families qualify for Habitat by demonstrating a housing need (affordability, substandard conditions, overcrowding), their willingness to partner with us by investing 200 hours of sweat equity, attending financial education classes, saving for a down payment, and repaying a no-interest mortgage to Habitat once they close on their home.

Join us on Saturday, April 27 for a Neighborhood Revitalization workday!

What is “Neighborhood Revitalization?”

Our neighborhood revitalization work follows the guidelines provided in our Quality of Life Framework, a data-driven and customizable approach developed by Habitat and vetted by community development experts to help to improve neighborhoods. With residents leading revitalization efforts, Habitat’s work looks different in each community — a bank and grocery store in one, a youth center in another, walking trails, home repairs and community gardens in yet another. For our community, we are helping neighbors revitalize their homes. We can do this by gardening, painting, paving, etc. Habitat’s decades of work illustrate that individuals and families thrive when they have a safe and stable home in a safe and stable community. Participating in neighborhood revitalization work allows Habitat to fully embrace our mission – to build homes, communities, and hope.

Habitat Mentors Needed

Habitat for Humanity is looking for Mentors to walk beside families for 9 months as their new home is being built. Mentors attend training, monthly Family Service Committee meetings and regularly check in with the Habitat family. If you have the gift of Mercy and Wisdom, this serving opportunity may be for you!

Mentorship means people who:

  • Care about families and who are patient, instructive, compassionate and responsible
  • Can commit to about 9 months to walk with the family
  • Agree to attend one mentor training session, and a monthly zoom meeting with the family services committee meeting to update the committee on their family.

Mentors agree to: (these are just basics, more information is provided)

  • Attend a one-hour training session at their convenience and receive a training manual
  • Attend Family Service committee meeting/Zoom once a month to update on progress
  • Be the family first point of contact for West Orange Habitat following guidelines
  • Not to provide any monetary or in kind gifts to family
  • Regularly connect with the family by phone, in person, text, email for about 9 months
  • Pray for and positively impact the family with joy!
  • Walk the journey with the family to answer questions and ensure they complete:
200 hours of sweat equity (300 for a married couple)
  • Financial Literacy classes (we host/provide these for families only/no mentors)
  • Saving for a down payment
  • Maintain good credit – again, mentor training is provided for this)
