Secondary Admission

Admission to major standing in Computer Science (CS), Cybersecurity (CB), Information Systems (IS) or Information Technology (IT) is competitive and requires a secondary application. Transfer students must complete at least six hours of CIS coursework at GVSU before applying and should consult with a PCEC advisor before scheduling courses.

Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to be considered. However, achievement of the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the major.

Steps for Applying for Secondary Admission:

Step 1: Declare Major

Students need to complete the University Major Declaration web form via myBanner. Declare yourself as a Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Systems or Information Technology major. When the form is received by the School of Computing, you will be assigned an advisor from the PCEC Advising Center and be notified by email.

Step 2: Meet with an Advisor

It is a great idea to schedule a meeting with a PCEC advisor, to schedule your initial coursework. You may schedule an appointment by calling (616) 331-6025 or visiting them online.

**DO NOT APPLY UNLESS YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE ABOVE MENTIONED COURSES.**

Students are allowed to apply for secondary admission two times ONLY. So, please use them wisely and do not apply until you meet ALL the secondary admission requirements.

Step 4: Application Review

The School of Computing will review applications the first Friday of every month, and once final grades have been release at the end of every semester. You will be contacted via email once a decision has been made.

Step 5:

You may schedule upper-level computing coursework once admitted as a major. Consult with your assigned PCEC advisor, if necessary.

Please Note: Students will not be allowed to enroll in any upper-level computing coursework (300 and 400 level classes), including CIS 290, until you have been admitted to the major. Please do not request overrides for these classes that require secondary admission standing, the override will be denied, and you will not be able to request another one, should the class close before you are able to register.

In order to allow students to stay on track for graduation the registration system will allow declared students to register for a limited number of 300 level courses. Those courses are listed below by major.
