Regulations for J-1 International Students
  • In compliance with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), international undergraduate students are required to carry a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester. International graduate students are required to carry a minimum of 9 credit hours each semester. For that reason, students must have the approval of the Director of International Students and Scholar Services before adding, dropping, or changing classes.
  • Students on J-1 visas are permitted to work on-campus up to a maximum of 20 hours per week. You are required to have a social security number for work purposes.
  • Any student wishing to leave the country either for travel or vacation must have their DS-2019 form endorsed each time by the Director of International Students and Scholar Services or the Coordinator of Outreach and International Students. For the endorsement, please allow a minimum of 2 days notice prior to the intended departure date. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure that the DS-2019 has this signature. There will not be problems for the student to leave the country, but without the signature, re-entry may be denied.
  • Students that change their on-campus address must notify the Director of International Students and Scholar Services immediately. The Director will also need to be notified and updated on changes to the permanent address in the student's home country for communication that is sent after the student returns home. Additionally, students must complete the Federal Form AR-11 when any address change is made while at the University. This form can be found at www.uscis.gov or stop by the Padnos International Center for a copy.
  • Every student on a J-1 visa is required to maintain a minimum amount of insurance coverage for the duration of their program.
  • Detailed regulations are available at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service website: www.uscis.gov.
