New from 988: Warning Signs Videos and Print Materials

Dear 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline Partners,

Another month, and the great work continues! Keep reading to access the newest resources and learn about recent events featuring the 988 Lifeline. We hope you had a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday for all those who celebrate!

Share New Videos About Suicide Warning Signs and Safety Plans

The 988 Lifeline’s newest videos are now available for download from the 988 Partner Toolkit.

Warning Signs

Two new videos focus on teaching people about signs that may indicate someone is struggling with mental health, such as changes in behavior, sleeping too much or too little, increased drug and alcohol use, severe emotional pain, and more. We encourage you to download and broadly share both videos (and use the accompanying social media copy) for adult warning signs and youth warning signs.

Safety Plans

Knowing the six steps to create a safety plan can demystify the process for people in need. This video walks through the safety plan steps so that people identify warning signs of crisis, coping strategies, and trusted resources. Remember that if you or someone you know needs support, call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org (and include that step as one of the resources in your safety plan).

New 988 Lifeline Print Materials Have Arrived in the SAMHSA Store

Several new materials are now available for you to order from the SAMHSA Store. Click each link below to order print versions of warning signs note cards for adults and youth, a warning signs poster for youth, and safety plan pads (and you can use these with the new video above). You can also download print-ready files and digital versions of each material.

988 Mental Health Lifeline Summit for Tribal Nations in Oklahoma

On November 14 and 15, Oklahoma Tribal Nations gathered for a two-day 988 Mental Health Lifeline Summit in Lawton, Oklahoma. The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes planned and coordinated the summit in partnership with additional 988 Mental Health Lifeline grantees (Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Comanche Nation, Muscogee Creek Nation, Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, Osage Nation, and Southern Plains Tribal Health Board) across Oklahoma. The event brought together Tribal leaders, Oklahoma 988 Tribal grantees, community advocates, and mental health experts from across the country, including officials from the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) and SAMHSA – you can watch the archived livestream here.

On both days, the summit featured presentations and discussions around suicide prevention, mental health, and how the 988 Lifeline can support those struggling with mental health. Monica Johnson, Director of the 988 & Behavioral Health Crisis Coordinating Office, presented about the 988 Lifeline on the first day of the summit and participated in the roundtable discussion with other SAMHSA leaders, Tribal Nations, and federal and state partners. The conversations at the summit served as a starting point for ongoing collaboration and partnership across these groups as everyone continues to work on building out crisis care services for all those in need of support.

988 Formative Research Now Available

To support 988 Communications work, the 988 Formative Research Project began in Summer 2022 with the goals of understanding attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, barriers, and motivations related to 988 and identifying help-seeking behaviors among key populations with a higher risk for or disproportionately impacted by suicide. The research also provided important findings about trusted messengers from the study’s population groups.

You can watch the webinar announcing the release of the findings, and all foundational documents from the formative research project are available online as part of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (Action Alliance) Public Messaging:

The 988 Formative Research project is a collaborative effort led by the Action Alliance, the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC), and the Ad Council Research Institute (ACRI), and supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
