Grants for Expansion and Sustainability of the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children with Serious Emotional Disturbances (CMHI)

Application Due Date: Wednesday, February 14, 2024

The purpose of this program is to provide resources to improve the mental health outcomes for children and youth, birth through age 21, at risk for or who have serious emotional disturbances, and their families.
Anticipated Total Available Funding: $30.4 million
Anticipated Number of Awards: 23

Strategic Prevention Framework – Partnerships for Success for States

Application Due Date: Wednesday, February 21, 2024

The purpose of this program is to help states, including U.S. Territories, Pacific Jurisdictions, and the District of Columbia, reduce the onset and progression of substance misuse and its related problems by supporting the development and delivery of state and community substance misuse prevention and mental health promotion services.
Anticipated Total Available Funding: $15.5 million
Anticipated Number of Awards: 12

Strategic Prevention Framework – Partnerships for Success for Communities, Local Governments, Universities, Colleges, and Tribes/Tribal Organizations

Application Due Date: Wednesday, February 21, 2024

The purpose of this program is to help communities, local governments, universities, colleges, and tribes/tribal organizations reduce the onset and progression of substance misuse and its related problems by supporting the development and delivery of community-based substance misuse prevention and mental health promotion services.
Anticipated Total Available Funding: $15.5 million
Anticipated Number of Awards: 41

Tribal Behavioral Health

Application Due Date: Wednesday, March 6, 2024

The purpose of this program is to prevent and reduce suicidal behavior and substance use/misuse, prevent overdose, reduce the impact of trauma, and promote mental health among American Indian/Alaska Native youth, up to and including age 24, by building a healthy network of systems, services, and partnerships that impact youth.
Anticipated Total Available Funding: $13 million
Anticipated Number of Awards: 52

Navigating the Complexities of Opioid Use Disorder in Aging Adults: Comorbid Psychiatric Diagnoses and Changing DEA Regulations — Webinar

Friday, December 1, 2023 12 p.m. ET

This session will address three critical aspects of this issue: explore the most common psychiatric conditions that often co-occur with opioid use disorder, gain insights into the complex interplay between mental health and opioid misuse, and discover strategies for more comprehensive patient care and understand the unique challenges and consequences of opioid misuse and diversion among older adults. Stay up-to-date on the latest Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and renewal requirements for all prescribers of controlled substances, including opioids.

The Connection Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Substance Use and Misuse: Deactivating Stigma to Support Healing Communities

Monday, December 4, 2023 11 a.m. ET

We know from the research that there’s a strong correlation between early childhood trauma, and mental and physical health issues. This training provides an overview of the science of positive experiences, how adverse childhood experiences and stigma greatly increase the risk for isolation and loneliness. This approach reduces barriers to improve health equity, resilience, and connection to support well-being.

Racial Equity Audit — Webinar Series

Tuesday, December 5, 2023 and Tuesday, December 12, 2023 2 p.m. ET

This event will work to assess organizations with racial equity and efforts to make web-based content reflective of the mission and values of the organization. The first part of the webinar series on December 5, 2023 will cover: The inclusion of language addressing, responding to, and advocating around equity-related topics. The second part of the webinar series on December 12, 2023 will cover: Assessment of the general tone and essence of a website related to engagement around equity, inclusion, and diversity.

Social Norms Approach: Overview and Tips for Success — Webinar

The social norms approach to behavior change focuses on positive messages about healthy behaviors and attitudes that are common to most people in a group, working to correct common misperceptions that unhealthy behaviors are more common. Trauma-Informed Corrections Care — Webinar Series

Monday, December 11, 2023 1 p.m. ET

This 3-part series provides a detailed understanding of trauma and the various types of trauma individuals experience. Sessions will explore the impact of secondary/vicarious trauma on corrections staff by examining the various ways exposure to traumatic events impacts the individual, the work they do, and the individuals they engage with on a daily basis. This series also explores what is needed to establish a trauma-informed organization, the impact of stigma and bias, and finishes with the interplay of two groups of trauma survivors - corrections staff, inmates, and/or parole/probation supervisees - and strategies to mitigate or reduce trauma activation potential among staff and those they supervise for more successful overall outcomes. The other two webinars in this series take place on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 1 p.m. and Friday, December 15, 2023 1 p.m.

Learn how your community can use Communities Talk to Prevent Alcohol and Other Drug Misuse  to support your local prevention efforts, hear what the 2024 cycle has to offer and how to register to host an event, and check out the experiences of past Communities Talk organizers through their success stories and campaign resources. Communities Talk supports communities in their efforts to raise public awareness about the harmful consequences of alcohol and other substance use among youth and young adults while also mobilizing action to implement evidence-based prevention strategies. Medicaid Policy & School Mental Health Part II — Webinar

Wednesday, December 13, 2023 12 p.m. ET

Medicaid is a leading source of financing for school mental health services and programs. As Medicaid policies change, there may be greater opportunities for mental health providers to bill Medicaid for more services in schools. This session will focus on policies concerning which providers can bill Medicaid for services and whether Medicaid can be billed for services provided in school settings.
Part I on November 8 focused on policies related to who is eligible for Medicaid coverage and what services Medicaid covers. You do not need to have participated in Part I to attend and learn from Part II.

In the 2003 holiday movie classic, “Elf,” the main character, Buddy, shares a particular fondness for the holiday season, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!” While the holidays can be a time of celebration and joy for many, it also can be a period of stress, sadness, and loneliness for others—and sometimes can be particularly difficult for people living with mental health and substance use conditions.

Honoring National Rural Health Day

On November 16, we observe National Rural Health Day, a time to recognize the approximate 65 million people, or one in five Americans, living in rural America and the potential barriers to healthcare they might face. While rural areas have more land area, fewer people, scenic landscapes, and a strong sense of community, residents often face barriers in accessing healthcare services needed to reduce disparities between rural and urban health outcomes.

Addressing Social Determinants of Health Among Individuals Experiencing Homelessness

Over 582,000 individuals across the country were experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2022. The Point-in-Time (PIT) census is a count of sheltered and unsheltered individuals experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. The PIT count is valuable in quantifying homelessness, identifying year-over-year trends, and supporting policy development.

SAMHSA’s Disaster Technical Assistance Center developed this list of resources for those working with and supporting individuals and communities emotionally impacted by the Israel-Hamas conflict and is intended for various populations and service sectors.

Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) 2021: Admissions to and Discharges from Substance Use Treatment Services Reported by Single State Agencies

SAMHSA has released the 2021 Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) Annual Report. The annual report details episode-level data on clients aged 12 and older receiving substance use treatment services from facilities that are licensed or certified by their respective single state agencies.
