The Unity Challenge to Dismantle Racism is designed to create dedicated time and space to build more effective social justice habits, particularly those dealing with issues of race, power, privilege, and leadership. Participants will explore racial equity and social injustice through activities designed to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination.

This challenge was created by the Dismantling Racism Coalition of Stark County, a collaboration between 15 organizations: Child & Adolescent Behavioral Health, Coming Together Stark County, The Greater Stark County Urban League, Kent State University at Stark, Ohio Department of Education State Support Team Region 9, Stark County Collaborative on Race Relations, Stark Education Partnership, Stark County Educational Service Center, Stark County Health Department and local health departments (Alliance, Canton City, and Massillon), Stark County Mental Health and Addiction Recovery, United Way of Greater Stark County, and YWCA Canton.  .

Participants are presented with challenges such as reading an article, listening to a podcast, reflecting on personal experience and more. Activities like these help us to discover how racial injustice and social injustice impact our community, to connect with one another, and to identify ways to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination. This challenge is an exciting opportunity to dive deep into racial equity and social justice. We hope you will join us on this journey!

This challenge was originally developed by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr. and Debby Irving and has been adapted by many organizations across the country.  We would like to thank the many organizations, especially United Way of Washtenaw County and YWCA Cleveland, that helped localize information and adapt this training to Stark County!

Dismantling Racism Coalition of Stark County Chapters:
In the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd, Canton, like many cities across the country witnessed community unrest. In June 2020, The Dismantling Racism Coalition of Stark County was formed in response to this turmoil with the goal of raising awareness of systemic racism in our communities. Since the Coalition’s formation, their message has reached thousands of community members through various initiatives and partnered with dozens of organizations to continue deepening the awareness about all levels of racism and how it impacts us locally.

Following the rollout of the 15-Day Unity Challenge to Dismantle Racism, the Coalition engaged with the local community to determine where and how the work to dismantle racism would continue. Community dialogue determined three topical case study topics.

From October to December 2020, the Coalition facilitated three online community discussions on Education, Privilege, and Allyship. The discussions were designed to continue the conversation concerning racism and discrimination and were well attended. Following the education case study conversations, behavioral health was identified as an opportunity for learning and led to three additional community dialogue sessions. Future case studies will include housing, wealth disparities, and faith-based perspectives to address dismantling racism.
