BLA Community Deserves Transparency and Immediate Review from BPS

On Fri., June 9, the BLA Community learned that 93 of 109 Boston Latin Academy (BLA) Teachers -- a total of 85%, representing rookies to veterans, and diverse demographic backgrounds -- raised their collective concerns via a Vote of “No Confidence” in Head of School Gavin Smith. The vote was facilitated by the Boston Teachers Union (BTU) according to existing protocols in conjunction with the BLA Faculty Senate.

Head of School Smith informed BPS Superintendent Skipper that his intention is to remain at BLA. She expressed disappointment in the “No Confidence” Vote and prematurely expressed her support of Mr. Smith. Her decision was made without Due Diligence and without asking Teachers what concerns they have.

In the Spirit of Transparency, the Concerns of Teachers and the BLA Community need to be Fully, Respectfully Considered.
An 85% Vote of “No Confidence” in a school leader warrants an urgent and thorough review.

We ask Superintendent Skipper to:

1.) Retract her premature statement from Friday so she can ultimately make a well-informed decision to address this 85% "No Confidence" Vote against Head of School Gavin Smith.

2.) Meet with All BLA Teachers and learn what concerns they have
so she can better understand the conditions at BLA that resulted in 93 out of 109 Teachers affirming a "No Confidence" Vote against Head of School Gavin Smith.

3.) Inform the BLA Community of those factors and make space for BLA Families to share their concerns as well.
