Lynch, Aldean/Underwood Lead Airplay The fiercest battle we’ve seen in some time for the “Label of the Year” title is raging as we begin the eighth month of the 2022 chart year. The virtual-three-way tie for the top honor among Broken Bow, Big Loud and Capitol is the closest we’ve seen in the 13 years that Capitol has dominated Country-chart label shares. In fact, only 36,000 points separate the three imprints. Each boasts double-digit charts shares, something we have never seen in the past. Enabling that rare statistic are the myriad of collaborations, which yield chart-share points for both artists’ imprints. Broken Bow’s drive to the top is powered by the tremendous one-two MacKenzie Porter punch of the year’s top two songs and Dustin Lynch thus far – “Thinking ‘Bout You” from Dustin Lynch and MacKenzie Porter and “If I Didn’t Love You,” the duet from Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood. Further bolstering BBR Morgan are Lainey Wilson joining Cole Wallen Swindell on “Never Say Never” (10) and Aldean’s three-week No. 1 “Trouble With A Heartbreak,” currently at No. 29 for the year, but also aimed squarely at the year’s Top 10. Big Loud stakes its claim to No. 1 with Hardy, Dierks Bentley and Breland a pair of Morgan Wallen hits. “Sand In My Boots” ranks No. 3 for the year, while “Wasted On You,” at No. 38, may well be destined for the year’s Top 10. Also propelling Big Loud to double-digit chart shares are the Dierks Bentley, Breland and Hardy collab “Beers On Me” (11); Jake Owen’s “Best Thing Since Backroads” (24); Hardy’s “Give Heaven Some Hell” (27) and Ernest and Wallen’s “Flower Shops” (41). Capitol’s hopes for a 14th consecutive showing as LOTY are bolstered by the aforementioned Underwood/Aldean duet and the Bentley collab, along with current Top 50 showings by Keith Urban’s “Wild Hearts,” (13) (continued on page 7)

Ruppel’s Country Pride Journey

Less than a year ago, newly minted Townsquare/Lansing, MI Dir./Content & WITL PD/on-air talent Jonathan “JR” Ruppel shared on Facebook that he is a gay man. While his journey to living his truth was lifelong, a series of events two years in the making allowed him to open and walk through that door, including a nudge from Country Aircheck. “Reading your piece last year about other openly gay men and women in the Country radio community gave me the courage to come out myself,” Ruppel says. “I had known about Blair Garner and Cody Alan, of Ruppel course, but I had no idea there were so many

Smiles Per Hour: Capitol’s Keith Urban kicks off The Speed of Now Tour in Tampa. Pictured (back, l-r) are WCTQ/Sarasota’s Frank Harris, WQYK’s JR Jaus, WAVW/Ft. Pierce’s Heath West, WKIS/Miami’s Tim Conlon, WQIK/Jacksonville’s Bradley Thornton, the label’s Bobby Young, WFUS’ Cindy Spicer, WPCV/Lakeland, FL’s Julie Kay, Urban, the label’s Royce Risser, WQYK’s Launa Phillips, WWKA/Orlando’s Ashley Morrison, Townsquare’s Kurt Johnson, WKLB/Boston’s Dawn Santolucito and WWKA’s Steve Stewart; (front, l-r) Borman Entertainment’s DJ Kisshauer, the label’s Megan Kleinschmidt, Annie Sandor and David Friedman, WKRO/Daytona Beach’s DJ Tremble, WFUS’ Sarah Jacobs and the label’s Trudie Daniell. others like me who were living and working in this industry.” He is referring to last year’s two-part Pride Month feature in Country Aircheck Weekly (here and here) that included testimonials from radio and industry pros. “Without that knowledge, and the perceived support that came from knowing there were people willing and ready to embrace me, I’m not sure when – or if – I would have felt comfortable coming out.” Ruppel avoided his attraction to men, to the extent of marrying women and having kids. “I always knew, though, that I was not being true to my real feelings,” he says. “When I moved to Portland, ME in 2019 [as Saga WPOR PD/afternoon host], my third marriage was crumbling, and I went alone. Something had to give.” Portland offered a more accepting environment. “There were even openly gay people working in radio there ... such a culture shift compared to where I grew up in Tennessee [and worked in] other Southern states.” In Maine, he started a relationship with a man whose story was similar, but Ruppel was concerned earlier feelings of guilt and self-loathing would resurface. “I had convinced myself that Blair [Garner] and Cody [Alan] were able to live and work in this industry as openly gay men because they had reached such a high level in their careers,” he says. “To me, it felt like they had nothing to lose – though I’m sure that’s far from the truth. But, when I saw the Country Aircheck article with others working in local radio – some even in the deep South – I was floored. Those people had everything to lose but were living freely and speaking openly. Why shouldn’t I?” Ruppel credits Brothers Osborne’s TJ Osborne, as well. “When TJ came out [in Feb. 2021 via Time magazine], I was surprised,” he explains. “It broke down a lot of stereotypes people have about what a gay man is, does, looks like or acts like. It also made me happier for him knowing what a burden must have been lifted. I wanted that for myself.” On Aug. 17, 2021, Ruppel took the leap and made his Facebook declaration. Afterward, multiple people from the Country Aircheck story reached out with support and encouragement. “I had slowly told those closest to me – including my kids – but to have that out for the world to know ... I’ve never felt such an instant relief,” Ruppel says. Coming out also changed the way Ruppel pursued jobs. “I was worried about being honest as I was interviewing, and I sought advice from some of those interviewed in the Country Aircheck

feature,” he notes. “In the end, I felt it was best to lead with honesty.” Ruppel says most of the cluster management teams he interviewed with were accepting. “I’m grateful for the happiness I’ve found and the peace I’ve felt the past year, and I hope everyone who is carrying similar burdens can have those lifted.” He also hopes the industry continues to embrace those who chose to live openly. Chart Chat

Congratulations to Parmalee, Carson James, Renee Leymon, Adrian Michaels and the Stoney Creek promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1. Parmalee “Take My Name” becomes the group’s third chart topper, following last year’s “Just The Way” with Blanco Brown and “Carolina” in Dec. 2013. Songwriters are Ashley Gorley, Ben Johnson, David Fanning and Matt Thomas. Kudos to Lauren Thomas and the Columbia crew on racking up 135 adds for Luke Combs’ “The Kind Of Love We Make.” That’s the most adds for any record since “Undivided” by Tim McGraw & Tyler Hubbard landed 152 on Jan. 18, 2021. The second single from Combs’ Growin’ Up album, which will be released June 24, debuts at No. 28 and becomes his second-highest debut behind “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” which debuted at No. 24. This is also the highest chart entry since “Undivided” (No. 26).

OFF THE RECORD Warner/WAR’s Chris Janson goes Off The Record: My 2022 highlights include releasing my new album, All In, and touring again! My new single, “Keys To The Country,” is just meant to be played live. It is a summertime anthem, and I have a blast performing it every single time. Being a dad and husband always comes first, but I’ve been able CHRIS JANSON to blend my family and work lives really well. My wife, Kelly, runs the business side, and I play the music. The kids come on the road, too. My son Jesse has even joined me on stage a few times! (Watch Jesse join his dad on stage here.) All of my kids are talented … but I do think Georgia and Jesse are following my footsteps in their own ways. Georgia is a great writer, and Jesse is a great entertainer. “Keys To The Country” is the song of the summer, and All In is by far my best album to date. I went “all in” on every part of the process, from writing to producing. It’s also got two great collaborations, one with Eric Church and another with Travis Tritt. It was a natural conversation after we did the song together to do some shows with Travis, so we booked a co-headlining tour for this fall. Come check it out! I believe we have a giant, chart-topping song in the works with “Keys To The Country,” and I’ve got plenty more where that came from! Quartz Hill’s Joe Nichols signed red solo cups and made them available for sale at his merch table during a recent show with 100% of proceeds going to the Toby Keith Foundation. Nichols has also set up a QR code to accept donations in honor of Keith. More here. Pearl’s Garth Brooks will conclude The Stadium Tour Aug. 6 at NRG Stadium in Houston.
