Thank you for your interest in the Vanderbilt Biomedical Informatics Summer Program (VBISP).

Summer research opportunities are available for: high school students, community college students, undergraduate students, medical students, and graduate students. Summer positions are full-time (40 hours per week) paid positions for the full ten weeks of the program.

Our expected program dates for 2023 are May 30-August 4, 2023.

General requirements/information:

  • Due to limitations from our sources of funding, positions are only available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • For many research projects, a background in computer science and programming is an advantage. However, this is not a requirement. We encourage individuals with backgrounds in the social sciences, healthcare, and other fields to apply.
  • Our program does not use a Grade Point Average (GPA) cutoff and does not require students be in a specific year of their education. We encourage applications from all students.
  • For high school students: we are only able to consider high school students attending high schools located in the Nashville area. Priority for program spots will be given to students in Metro Nashville Public Schools.
  • We anticipate our program being in person for 2023, but this is dependent on multiple circumstances. We successfully conducted VBISP in a remote/virtual format in summer 2020 and summer 2021 before returning to an in-person format in summer 2022, so regardless of pandemic-related situations, we anticipate being able to move forward with VBISP in summer 2023.

Materials required as part of this application:

  • Updated resume or curriculum vitae
  • Transcripts from your current institution (unofficial copy is acceptable)
  • Letter of good standing from your current institution. This is a letter indicating that you are currently enrolled at the institution as a student and are not on academic probation. Each institution has specific approaches to issuing these letters, which can include the Registrar's Office, Office of Student Affairs, or an Office of Academic Services. Please check with your institution regarding the appropriate way to obtain this letter.

Two letters of recommendation are also required. You will need to provide contact information for your two recommenders, and they will then receive instructions on how to upload their recommendation letters.

In order to be considered for an interview, your application must be fully complete and we must have received all of the required materials listed above. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as they are received. We will begin reviewing applications in December 2022. Final deadline for applications for summer 2023 is February 15, 2023.
