SUU Names New Deans in Colleges of Engineering and Computational Sciences, and Health Sciences

Southern Utah University Provost Dr. Jon Anderson announced today the appointments of two new deans. Dr. Jeffrey Miller will serve as Dean of the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences, and Dr. Jon “Tony” Oliver has been appointed Dean of the College of Health Sciences. Both were selected after a national search.

“I’m proud to announce the hirings' of both Dr. Miller and Dr. Oliver. Both will be great assets to the University and to the community,” said SUU Provost Anderson. “After reviewing a large number of candidates and completing extensive searches, the visions shared by Dr. Miller and Dr. Oliver fit well within the mission and direction of SUU. Both come with the depth of experience and perspective needed to enhance student success and build culture in a shared governance environment. We look forward to having them join SUU.”

Dr. Jeffrey MillerDr. Miller comes to SUU from the University of Southern California where he currently serves as department chair of the Information Technology Program. Miller previously taught at the University of Alaska Anchorage, the American Public University System, and California State University, Los Angeles. He also has extensive private sector experience as a software engineer.

“I’m so excited to be joining a university that prioritizes student learning and success. In our expanding technological world, providing students with access to quality higher education is essential to continued advancements,” said Dr. Miller.

Miller earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and Computer Science, Master of Science in Computer Science, and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California.

Dr. Jon OliverDr. Oliver currently serves as the Interim Associate Dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Eastern Illinois University. He has served at that institution as a professor since 2002 with a specialization in Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation.

"It will be a professional privilege to join SUU’s prominent faculty and staff to collaboratively advance the mission of the College of Health Sciences through its distinguished academic programs,” said Dr. Oliver. “Promoting healthier individuals and communities through education, experiential programming, and service learning will be an ongoing co-priority along with advocating for SUU faculty and students so that they can achieve their professional and academic goals. After visiting Cedar City annually for the past twenty years, my family and I are beyond enthused about returning to Utah to join the SUU community. I can’t wait to get started!”

Oliver earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Brigham Young University. He earned his PhD from the University of Kansas.

Both new deans begin their positions at SUU on July 1.

“I want to thank all who applied to serve as deans of these two colleges, especially the internal candidates at SUU,” said Provost Anderson. “I also want to publicly thank Dr. Jim Brandt, who served as interim dean of the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences and Dr. Camille Thomas, who served as interim dean of the College of Health Sciences.” Both served the institution and their respective colleges well.
