Tom Hanks voiced six characters in Polar Express.

Released in 2004, Polar Express is a Christmas film based on Chris Van Alsburg's book, The Polar Express. It's listed in the 2006 Guinness Book of World Records as the "first all-digital capture" film, where all acted parts were done in digital capture. This technology digitally records the actors' physical performances before "skinning" them with their animated forms.

Making this film as digital capture was a financial necessity. To bring the book to life via live action would have cost $1 billion, compared to the $165 million budget for digital capture.

Director Robert Zemeckis originally suggested to Tom Hanks that he perform all the Polar Express roles himself. When that proved to be too exhausting for Hanks, it was whittled down to six roles — Hero Boy, Father, Conductor, Hobo, Scrooge, and Santa Claus.

Hanks and Zemeckis worked together previously on Forrest Gump and Cast Away.
