Figueroa to serve among fellow policy and professional experts, community advocates, and business, industry, and labor leaders from across the Commonwealth

Philadelphia (December 8, 2022) – JEVS Human Services’ President & CEO Cynthia F. Figueroa was recently appointed to serve on the Transition Advisory Committees assembled by Governor-Elect Josh Shapiro and Lieutenant Governor-Elect Austin Davis. Figueroa will work with fellow non-profit leaders and community advocates on the human services committee.

“I am honored to join the teams of diverse, experienced leaders and experts across the Commonwealth to assist Governor-Elect Shapiro and Lieutenant Governor-Elect Davis in moving our state forward,” said Figueroa. “For more than 80 years, JEVS Human Services has helped people to live independent and healthy lives, build skills, and to find and keep good jobs. I’m excited to share both the JEVS experience, and from my previous work with city government. I will also draw from my experience as a nonprofit leader of community programs and domestic violence services.”

Prior to joining JEVS, Figueroa served as Deputy Mayor, Office of Children and Families under Mayor Jim Kenney. In this role, she provided leadership and oversight of the Philadelphia Department of Human Services (DHS). While at the City, she led efforts to right-size the child welfare and juvenile justice systems through her focus on prevention, decreasing the number of children in the child welfare system. Figueroa also worked with the state to significantly reduce the number of children in residential placements. Her leadership also brought unparalleled transparency to DHS through performance tracking and public reporting.

“Cynthia Figueroa’s life work has been to improve systems and lift up the communities she serves. Her strategic, thoughtful approach to problem-solving will be an asset to the Shapiro-Davis transition team,” said David Sanders, executive vice president for systems improvement at Casey Family Programs, the nation’s largest operating foundation focused on safely reducing the need for foster care.

Figueroa’s leadership of JEVS Human Services also brings to the transition team the experience of directing one of the largest, multi-service non-profit organizations in the Greater Philadelphia region, focusing on individuals with physical, developmental, and emotional challenges as well as those facing adverse socio-economic conditions including unemployment and underemployment. JEVS Human Services programs include Orleans Technical College, which graduates students credentialed in the building and construction trades. For more information, www.jevs.org.
