Shake It

by Robert Connely Farr

Robert Connely Farr is a songwriter from Bolton Mississippi, hometown of musical legends Charley Patton, Sam Chatmon, Bo Carter & Walter Vinson. In Bentonia (just up the road from Bolton) bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes has mentored Farr in a particular form of Delta Blues called the Bentonia Blues. Holmes learned this regional style directly from Henry Stuckey, who also mentored the renowned bluesman “Skip” James.

In 2018, entranced by the obscure tuning and haunting melodies of Jimmy’s teachings, Robert recorded and released his full length “Dirty South Blues” to immediate critical acclaim. KEXP named it one of their top albums of the year and Farr was nominated for both Songwriter of the Year & New Artist of the Year by Canada’s prestigious Maple Blues Awards.

In 2019, Farr took his band down to play Jimmy “Duck” Holmes’ Bentonia Blues Festival; it proved to be a seminal experience for the group. High off the vibe of the festival, they came back to Vancouver to start recording; it was then Robert received an unexpected cancer diagnosis & emergency surgery.

After recovery from surgery Farr hit the ground running, rapidly releasing 3 albums culminating in his fantastic sixteen track brainchild, “Country Supper”. With a sustained buzz from critics and fans alike, “Country Supper” went on to garner scores of glowing reviews and by the end of the year, receive numerous placements on 'Best of 2020' lists.

“Shake It” is Robert Connely Farr’s ninth studio album. With the help of his band, “The Dirty Dirty” (drummer Jay Bundy Johnson, and bassist Tom Hillifer) Farr delivers compelling sonic landscapes; his gravelly voice and howling guitar tell of swamps packed with catfish while spirits dance in the sky.

Over nine blistering tracks (clocking in at a tight 30 minutes), “Shake It” opens with two covers from Farr’s mentors – Charley Patton’s ‘Screaming & Hollering’ & Jimmy “Duck” Holmes’ ‘Going Away To Leave You’. Six originals by Farr & Co hint at love and suffering in the aftermath of a cancer diagnosis while ‘Lefty’ and the title track rock with all the grit and fire of a man that’s dodged more than a few bullets.

Country Supper

BOLTON, Miss. — Casting a hypnotic spell rooted in the bedrock of Mississippi’s Delta and Hill Country blues, Robert Connely Farrs new 16-song Country Supper transcends the borders of genres by transforming them into his own distinctive, deeply rooted Americana style.

Following his heralded 2019 album Dirty South Blues, which earned comparisons to John Prine and Gregg Allman, the just-released collection is a display of sonic and songwriting shamanism that thrives on driving, laconic grooves in support of the casual command of Farr’s dust-dappled voice and the sting of his grumbling, rock-of-ages guitar.

"sound like they are invoking some ancient black magic, when giving the old blues riffs a polish This one is mean, lean, and has no excess guitar solos wearing it down."

#DIRECTACTU

"gives us a very blues, very roots atmosphere, quite well mastered by this artist originally from Bolton, #Mississippi."

#INDEPENDENTMUSICREVIEWS

"Robert plays alongside drummer Jay Bundy Johnson. The connection is dynamite. Jay has such a smooth small kit big sound approach, while the opportunity wasn’t lost on Farr, his guitar is fat and rangy, the sound is dirty and charged with energy. There is honesty in the sound, soul in the lyric. Well done."

#INDIECRIOLLO

( #Ecuador )

"a whole process, which seduces and proposes a broken and lively composition, capable of destroying any stereotype of a song with low production. It is rock and roll for those who still believe in the underground."

#MYSTICSONS

"cracks out the killer riffs for this bold and anthemic blues-rock stomper"

#REIGNLAND

"..sound of that guitar & drums is awesome! The vocals are the real thing & best I’ve heard."

#PLAYMAID

"Farr’s vocals deserve high praise, they hold a grittiness & tone that are unmatched by commercial vocalists. The power & heart embodied in his performance are far from lackluster, they are compelling, & drip in Mississippi grit."

AMERICAN BLUES SCENE

AMERICANA HIGHWAYS

(ALBUM OF THE WEEK) “…The album (Dirty South Blues) characterizes the blues, while giving… a Southern touch. …exciting because it rarely occurs in such consistent form.”

roots highway

“…when in the wake of a tradition that perhaps the Americans have learned more from the British, (Farr) returns home & does not miss the passage of witness, approaching with great respect to the lesson of Jimmy "Duck" Holmes…”

rootstime.be

“…the gems continue to follow each other… It is Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, born in 1947, to honor that he took care of Connely & mentored him in this exceptional blues style where it is as if you see the ghosts of the Mississippi Sheiks, Charley Patton and Skip James.”

santa rosa records

“As Farr attempts to reconcile some of the more controversial elements of his beloved homeland, he must first face his own demon…”

soul bag (france)

“When you listen to “Dirty South Blues", you think of those ballads that put you in the skin of a man covered in the blood of his loved one. Uncomfortable posture, which forces us to realize our intimate complicity with the narrator. Farr talks about racial and economic violence, but the approach is close. He tells a South falsely asleep and detached from his story, ready to bite to death. "You better watch your back, boy.” These threats float in the air, a pollution that sticks to the hair, from which neither the singer nor the listener can easily detach themselves. By assuming this unease, Farr gives himself the means to be freer than many other followers of the bluesmen of the South. We find the hypnotic sound of Bentonia, of which Farr is a continuator through Jimmy "Duck" Holmes. The nappes of guitar and organ come to weave progressively oppressive knots, echoes of the difficulty to come out of the southern stagnation. An original sound and linked to the tradition of which he claims: to dive in the stagnant waters to finally breathe freely.” Benoit Gautier
