As summer beckons, “we need little to no excuse to seek out the water, even if just to feel a chilly mist on our faces for a few minutes,” writes G&G contributing editor Elizabeth Hutchison Hicklin in her roundup of a dozen stunning waterfalls around the South. The Bluegrass State’s “Niagara of the South,” an urban oasis in the heart of a South Carolina city, and Florida’s highest waterfall (yes, Florida has waterfalls) are just a few of the bucket list–worthy destinations. Read the story below, and explore other adventurous ways to stay cool.

The French Riviera. I never thought of myself as a cruise person until I recently discovered small-ship cruising. For a seven-night tour around the Western Mediterranean, I boarded Star Clipper, a five-mast sailing ship carrying 150 adventure-ready passengers. The only thing livelier than the topside bar at night? The ports of call. These were my favorites:
|
-
Portofino. Our sole stop in Italy delivered the most picturesque harbor I’ve ever beheld, ringed with candy-hued buildings reaching into lush hills. Bypassing the designer boutiques and desiring a cold libation on a sticky afternoon, I followed a small sign pointing up a cobbled path to a “lounge bar.” It turned into a thirty-minute trek past ivy-draped villas, culminating at a shaded terrace bar named La Portofinese. The local lager was cold, the view of the azure sea was stunning, and I was reminded that wandering often rewards.
-
Corsica. A wave-buffeted tender ride deposited us at the base of a towering medieval citadel built to defend the ancient trading town of Calvi from pirate raids. Once again I trod to the summit, an audio tour shepherding me from the perfectly preserved thirteenth-century St. Jean-Baptiste Cathedral to a pile of rubble purported to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. A wrong turn led me straight into the headquarters of the paratroopers of the famed French Foreign Legion. Who knew?
-
St. Tropez. This port lived up to its glitzy reputation. Starting the day among the deeply tanned beautiful people on the famous Pampelonne Beach, I managed to stick my toes into the exclusive sand of celebrity-magnet Club 55 while sipping a cider. For dinner along the bustling, jet-setty harbor, a fellow passenger guided me to classic French eatery Senequier, where we paired a chilled rosé with front-row views of bobbing superyachts. Yes, it was all as wonderful as it sounds.
