A Weekend in Braves Country |
“With hopes for another World Series title higher than a Ronald Acuña Jr. home run, the months between the Atlanta Braves’ April 5 home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the season closer on September 29 promise to be rollicking around Truist Park,” writes G&G contributor Josh Green. If you’re heading to Atlanta for a game, check out our locals-approved options for where to stay, eat, and play around the stadium’s bustling district—and in the heart of ATL a few miles away.

CAROLINE SANDERS CLEMENTS

Athens, Georgia. I grew up in this little college town, and my family still lives there, so I get back as often as I can. And while, for me, the hottest restaurant is my parent’s kitchen and snuggling with my newborn nephew tops the must-do list, Athens has an art, culture, and food scene that vastly outpaces its population size. Here are some of my favorite things to do when I’m in town:
|
-
Eat: Every time I go home, there seems to be a new hotspot to check out. Most recently, I’ve loved the Thai small plates—like pork dumplings, mushroom laab, and seafood curry—at Puma Yu’s, a new restaurant in a recently revitalized denim mill that just earned a James Beard nod.
-
Drink: A stone’s throw from Puma Yu’s, two new cocktail spots are working to elevate the city’s notorious drinking scene. Try Nighthawks, run by Jerry and Krista Slater (formerly with One Flew South and H. Harper Station) for a choose-your-own-adventure old fashioned and a bologna sandwich, or Hidden Gem on Barber Street, which serves cheeky cocktails in a cozy, colorful space. If beer is more your speed, head downtown for a taste of both old and new: Creature Comforts Brewing celebrates its tenth anniversary this month, and Peach State Lite, a new local favorite, is on tap at bars around town.
-
Listen: While in Athens, you have to catch some live music, whether at the 40 Watt, Georgia Theatre, Hendershot’s, or out in the streets. In spring, Twilight Criterium brings hundreds of professional bicyclists and stages of live music for the annual road race; in summer, AthFest turns downtown into a block party; and come fall, Historic Athens’s PorchFest sees local bands setting up shop on the front lawns of homes throughout town.
