Spirited Festivals for Bourbon Lovers |
Throwing a successful whiskey festival requires more than just a roomful of bourbon. A great gathering emphasizes the spirit of America’s native spirit, with opportunities to mingle with distillers, entertainment, education, camaraderie, and, of course, plenty of sips to try. Below are seven upcoming bourbon fests, including a bacchanalia in the Big Easy, a bourbon-and-music celebration in Louisville, and G&G’s own inaugural event in the Bluegrass State. —Tom Wilmes, G&G contributor

A scene from Pensacola’s Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: Beautiful beaches are just one of the charms of Pensacola, Florida. Venture beyond its white-sand shores and the Panhandle city’s sophisticated arts scene comes into focus. It’s a place where you can watch dolphins leap by day and ballet dancers leap at night. Watch the Blue Angels soar overhead, then listen to a soaring aria. Or view Mother’s Nature canvas as the sun sets over the Gulf of Mexico, then feast your eyes on more color at downtown galleries and the esteemed Pensacola Museum of Art. Plan your artful escape to Pensacola.

Montreal. Spring does not come early to Quebec’s largest city. But when I found some free time to reboot a pleasure-trip plan previously squashed by the pandemic, I went for it.

Eats: My Airbnb in the Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood made for an easy, cold-acclimating stroll to Schwartz’s Deli, where a signature sandwich heaped with brisket smoked overnight and steamed for hours gave a seriously Southern low-and-slow vibe, even on rye. Speaking of bread, Montreal is known for bagels baked in wood-fire ovens, so I beat the morning rush to a warm sesame-with-a-schmear at the famous St. Viateur Bagel Shop. Noting that everyone at L’Express bistro was chatting in French, I declined the English dinner menu and still managed a delicieux salmon with lentils, though it was difficult to quit the giant jar of serve-yourself cornichons placed before every patron.
-
Art and architecture: The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts provided a stimulating respite from a blustery afternoon—my favorite piece was a seven-foot, cypress-carved chest of drawers in the shape of a grenade. Notre-Dame Basilica’s Gothic Revival architecture is truly dramatic, but I was equally awed by the soaring, surprising Art Deco interior of Saint Joseph’s Oratory.
- From below and above: Underground City, a subterranean pedestrian network that links offices, colleges, shopping malls, and a huge food hall, lets Montrealers make like mole people. Still, I surfaced to brave icy patches on a hike to the summit of Mont Royal Park, where a stone plaza delivers sweeping skyline views. Will I return some future summer to compare? Oui!
