Dr. Jean Charles Domerçant is a Senior Research Engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). Dr. Domerçant currently serves as the Research Engagements Manager, part of GTRI’s leadership team. In this role, Dr. Domerçant works to develop, foster, coordinate, and manage collaborative research partnerships. He serves as GTRI’s liaison to Georgia Tech Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (IRIs) to promote and develop collaborative research between GTRI and the IRIs. Beyond the GT and GTRI communities, he will also develop, foster, coordinate, and manage collaborative research partnerships between GTRI and Georgia Tech with Minority Serving Institutions, other University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs), Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) and government labs.
Dr. Domerçant began his career at GTRI in 2017, serving as the Chief Engineer to the Defense Open Systems Division within the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS). During this time, he worked closely with the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) and the Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) in support of developing and applying Open Systems Architectures. This included working with various open standards such as the Hardware Open Systems Technologies (HOST) standard, consortium-based software standardization initiatives like the Future Airborne Capabilities Environment (FACE) effort, and the Functional Allocation for Strategic Reuse (FASTR) project for functional decomposition.
Following this role, he served as the Head of the Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Research and Applications Branch within the Systems Engineering Research Division in ELSYS. He led a team of dedicated researchers in the development and application of MBSE tools and methods to support Department of Defense acquisition, complex systems design and architecting, and digital engineering. As part of these efforts, he worked closely with other branches and divisions in the areas of modeling and simulation, human systems engineering, open architectures, and test and evaluation.
Dr. Domerçant currently serves as an instructor in the Georgia Tech Professional Masters in Applied System Engineering (PMASE) program, teaching Systems of Systems and Architectures. He also serves as a mentor in the Georgia Tech College of Aerospace Engineering Mentors in Residence program, helping to guide undergraduate AE students along their career paths.
Dr. Domerçant obtained his Ph.D. from the Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory at Georgia Tech after obtaining a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2008, a Master of Engineering Management from Old Dominion University in May 2006, and a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in January 2000. He has participated in the professional internship program at BAE Systems in the area of capability-based design. From 2000-2006 he was an officer in the U.S. Navy's submarine force and assigned to the USS Los Angeles (SSN 688) where he completed his qualifications in submarines and as a navy nuclear engineer.
