I can't say enough good things about this place! I'm in my 30s now, but have been a patron since I was 12. The prices are extremely fair, the condition of all the books is excellent. If you can't find a book, they're more than happy to place an order. The people who run it are an absolute joy. They're so friendly and helpful...and it's not that fake friendliness you see a lot in Portland, they genuinely enjoy talking with their customers and making them feel welcome. The store is also overseen by their cute cats who rule the roost.
Personal story: in 2007, my family's home caught fire due to faulty wiring from the landlord. We lost everything. My uncle lived right down the street from Bearly, and since we were staying with him, I spent a lot more time near the store. The owner made mention of it, and I told him the story. He immediately got a big sack and told me he wanted me to fill it up with as many books as I wanted and I could have them at no charge. That is a testament to what good people they are and how much they care about their customers.
God bless you guys! I wish you all the best and I hope you stay around for many more years to come. Bearly Read Books is a treasure.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Jill M.Portland, OR259Mar 26, 2019
I used to go there alllllll the time! Saved me lots of money on a whole lotta books over the years. The only downside....its tiny!! But crowded to the hilt with books...just wish there was more space as its very cramped. Great prices and friendly staff. Reccomend!

It's been quite a few years, but I used to go to Bearly Read Books a lot when I was younger. Only recently have I begun visiting again. Bearly Read is a wonderful place for used paperbacks, with the largest amount of western paperbacks of any of the used bookstores I have reviewed here. Yes more than those big guys too, and that's where the puns begin.......... I sure hope I don't Embearass myself with this review.
Abearently they are not too picky about the quality of some of the paperbacks because some of the bindings are not in beary good shape, however, there are so many copies I have always been able to find a good clean version that didn't have to much wear. The cute little stamp in the front of the books is a constant reminder of where the book came from, but also concerns me sometimes since I collect books and hate to see stamps on them.
I know these may not be beary funny to some of you but I couldn't help it.......
Bearing in mind that the shop is really quite small, upon walking in a person could become bearalized at the number of paperbacks that are organized into such a small space. The place is nearly bearied in books from wall to wall, very neatly laid out in wall units. See my pictures. So before this review becomes unbearable, I will just say that for the casual reader looking for a low priced way to get popular paperbacks, this is a very good option, with great, friendly service and good organization. The pricing is a little weird so I took a picture of the pricing formula sheet that is current as of this review date. In short terms its half the cover price plus .60 cents. For credit card users beware there is a .70 cent fee for card use over cash.
Bearly read books is on my, when I am in the neighborhood list of places to stop, not my go out of the way to get there list. Give them a try; I think you will enjoy the people and the quantity of paperbacks.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Curt S.Portland, OR4677Mar 31, 2012
Bearly Read Books is a "trade in" store. This means that in addition to their fairly low prices for paperback (1/2 the cover price plus .70 cents per book), they'll take what you have in trade (no cash payouts) and let you run an account against book purchases. Every ten receipts gets you any book in the store free, plus a free book during your birthday week and many other bonus offers for regular customers.
A bit heavy on romance and "grandma" mysteries, Bearly Read has plenty of classics, recent NYT bestsellers and cool treasures for the reader willing to poke around a bit. Plus, they have in-shop cats......so, they've got that going for them.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Michelle H.Gresham, OR1017Nov 21, 2010
I LOVE this bookstore! I had been in here about 10 years ago and brought a whole slew of books. When I moved back into the area, low and behold, they still had my credit!
This place is crammed full of used books and I could spend hours in here. I usually just run straight over to the area of the books that I'm currently reading, grab a few, and leave. One of these days I'll take the time to peruse a little more. If you are looking for something they don't have, you can give them the info and when they get it in, they'll call you.

I have been going to Bearly Read Books for years and I love this place. The lady working there knows her authors really well and that helps me in finding a good author. She is up to date on the new books coming out and when I go in to find a book, I usually find what I am looking for, plus a few more authors to try out. One thing I really like about Bearly Read Books is the way Shelly makes sure that the books she takes in trade are gently used, do not smell musty and the pages are not torn or damaged. I like her filing system too, its easy to find the authors. A. Harris

I love this bookstore. The owner is up to date on books available, talks with customers, recommends great reads. My son and I love going in and talking with Shelley about books out and new ones. My mom loves rifling through the cookbooks and has gotten most of her favorite authors from this store. I would highly recommend this bookstore for the selections available. Thank you for making it a comfortable place to shop and browse.

Love this old little used book store! It has been there since I was a little kid, I remember going with my mom. Now I take my daughter who is in her 20s. If you loved used books this is definitely the place for you!
