Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (1-0) snapped a 4-4 tie with seven consecutive goals and went on to a 16-7 victory over Ursinus College (0-4) in the season opener for the Ospreys. Stockton netted the last four goals of the first half and first three markers of the second half during the run.
Casey Shultz (Sewell/Washington Twp.) led the Ospreys with a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists.
Jennifer Toal (Pine Beach/Toms River/South) chipped in with five goals and one assist for six points. Toal also grabbed a game-high seven draw controls.
Playing its fourth game of the season, Ursinus jumped out to a 2-0 lead while Stockton was still finding its way in its first contest of the year. The Ospreys regrouped quickly as freshman
Holly Yannacone (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) potted her first career goal just 22 seconds after the Bears' second tally.
Yannacone sparked a four-goal run in which Shultz sandwiched two counters around one by
Mary Carroll (Marlton/Cherokee) to vault the Ospreys into a 4-2 lead. Ursinus answered with a pair for a 4-4 tie, but Stockton took over from there.
After Carroll gave the Ospreys the lead for good at 5-4, Toal and
Michelle Pascrell (Howell/Freehold Twp.) scored 43 seconds apart. Toal later added her second goal of the half for an 8-4 lead at the break.
The 7-0 outburst continued in the second half as Shultz found the net followed by two straight markers from Toal to make it 11-4. The teams then went scoreless for nearly 11 minutes before Ursinus tried to rally with three straight goals to get within 11-7 with 3:47 remaining.
Toal halted the run 33 seconds later with the first of five consecutive tallies by Stockton. Schultz scored twice in 26 seconds and then freshman
Jade Rivera (Toms River/Jackson Liberty) netted her first career goal. Fellow rookie Yannacone added her second of the game in the closing seconds to cap the 16-7 triumph.
After missing all of last season due to injury, Stockton goalkeeper
Stevie Ader (Califon/Voorhees) earned the win with five saves in her return to the field. Pascrell supplemented her goal with a team-high six ground balls plus six draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Stockton's next game will be on Saturday when the Ospreys host St. Joseph's-Long Island at 3 p.m. in the first of three straight home games.
