Kimchi Nets Another Impressive Win Saturday

DURHAM – Duke women's tennis freshman Shavit Kimchi collected her second win against a top-30 ranked opponent on Saturday as she registered a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory over 17th-ranked Elza Tomase of Tennessee to highlight the second day of action in the opening weekend of the fall.

A native of Sdey Hemed, Israel, Kimchi is coming off a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win on Friday to open her collegiate career versus 27th-ranked Sydni Ratliff of Ohio State.  On Sunday, Kimchi faces sixth-ranked Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia in the championship of her bracket at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C.

Also in action at Furman, junior Ellie Coleman dropped a 0-6, 1-6 decision to Alexandra Vecic of Georgia.  Coleman goes up against Millie Rajecki on Sunday to close play.  Coleman and Kimchi teamed together in doubles Saturday to post an 8-3 win over Shahar Biran and Elise Mills of South Carolina.

At the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., junior Emma Jackson totaled a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 win over 86th-ranked Eleni Louka of Clemson. Blue Devil sophomore Katie Codd registered a walkover win against North Carolina's Reilly Tran to advance to the championship of her bracket, before falling, 3-6, 4-6, to 10th-ranked Abigail Rencheli of NC State.

Senior Karolina Berankova was leading Jenna Thompson, 3-6, 7-5, before retiring in her lone match Saturday.  Duke's 48th-ranked duo of Jackson and Berankova dropped an 8-6 doubles match against Selin Ovunc and Kaitlyn Carnicella of Auburn.

Both the Debbie Southern and Kitty Harrison events will close Sunday.
