DURHAM – Duke women's tennis junior Ellie Coleman, sophomore Katie Codd and freshman Shavit Kimchi each collected singles wins against ranked opponents on Friday to highlight the first day of action of the 2023 fall campaign for the Blue Devils at a pair of sites.  

In Greenville, S.C., at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, Coleman registered a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over 16th-ranked Irina Cantos Siemers of Ohio State, while Kimchi collected a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win in her Duke debut against 27th-ranked Sydni Ratliff of Ohio State.  The win over the No. 16 ranked player was the highest of Coleman's Blue Devil career.  

The Blue Devil duo of Coleman and Kimchi won their opening doubles match, 8-3, over Nevena Carton and Whitley Pate of Wake Forest, before dropping an 8-6 decision to Mai Nirundorn and Guilermina Grant of Georgia.  

In Chapel Hill, N.C., at the Kitty Harrison Invitational, Codd won both of her singles matches as she defeated Ruxi Schech of Charlotte, 6-2, 6-2, and top-seeded and No. 12 ranked Celia Belle Mohr of Vanderbilt, 6-3, 7-5.  It marked her first ranked win of Codd's short career.  Junior Emma Jackson opened the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Florida's Sophie Williams and then dropped a thriller, 2-6, 6-4, 11-13, to Selin Ovunc of Auburn.

Senior Karolina Berankova fell, 3-6, 2-6, to Qavia Lopez of Florida and 4-6, 3-6 to Lucie Petruzelova of Charlotte.  

In doubles play, Duke's 48th-ranked Jackson and Berankova posted an 8-2 win over Sara McClure and Lindsay Zink of North Carolina.
