RPS Direct Newsletter

Stay up-to-date with everything happening in RPS! Sign up for the RPS Direct, our daily newsletter straight from the desk of Superintendent Kamras!

RPS Direct is regularly distributed to over 36,000 stakeholders across the Richmond Public Schools Community, and is read by nearly 20,000 recipients daily. We welcome submissions from the Richmond community that are family-centered and geared towards children ages 0-18. External opportunities must be accessible to all families, i.e. free of cost (or offer financial assistance) and be accessible via public transportation. Events inside of Richmond are prioritized. Each event must be accompanied by a flier clearly stating the financial cost, or a website link where it is available on the home page. Additionally, content deemed appropriate for RPS Direct will typically appear in the publication one to three times, depending on the lead time, as well as a number of other factors.

Upon review, scholarship and employment opportunities for students will be featured on the RPS Opportunities Hub, which is routinely spotlighted as a resource in RPS Direct. Please forward all scholarship and employment opportunities to: opportunity@rvaschools.net.

Due to the amount of content shared and sourced via RPS Direct, most events will not run in Direct until 2-5 days prior. To have an event or community resource considered for RPS Direct, please send an email with the subject line: RPS Direct Submission to: outreach@rvaschools.net. Timing and inclusion of all submissions is at the discretion of the RPS Communications team.

Recent RPS Direct Updates

Dear #RPSStrong Family,

Tonight's updates:

Fruit and Veggie Week – To encourage students to make healthy food choices, we've partnered with Greater Richmond Fit4Kids and Performance Food Group to bring Fruit and Veggie Week to RPS! Students will have the opportunity to sample fresh fruits and veggies and participate in hands-on learning activities about nutrition. We'll also be sharing some interesting fun facts (like the one below) about fruits and veggies, along with some quick and easy recipes that families can prepare together at home. Enjoy!

Scholastic Kids Press – Beginning tomorrowMarch 27, students around the world, ages 10-14, can apply to become a kid reporter for the award-winning Scholastic Kids Press program. Throughout the year, Scholastic Kid Reporters cover issues that matter most to them and their peers. They've made headlines by interviewing some big names, including President Barack Obama, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, conservationist Jane Goodall, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai, and ballerina/author/actress Misty Copeland! For more information, visit their website.

Dear #RPSStrong Family,

Tonight's updates:

School Board Recognitions – Enormous gratitude to the fourth and fifth grade students from J.B. Fisher ES who performed "Living in Harmony" by Bryson Finney during last night's Board meeting. The song, featuring student soloist Casimir Vassar, was the ensemble's favorite from their Black History Month performance. They were phenomenal!

We also recognized John Marshall HS Principal Monica Murray, recipient of the 2024 R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership, and William Fox ES Principal Daniela Jacobs, finalist for the award! Honorees will receive $20,000 to be used for school initiatives as well as an unrestricted $10,000 cash grant. Ms. Murray plans to use her award to visit Angola with four John Marshall students who plan to pursue a career in education. Thank you, Principals Murray and Jacobs, for your outstanding leadership!
