SONG PREMIERE: Gringo Star Bring Bold Openheartedness On Subtle “Stand and Turn Away”

Somehow a band name like Gringo Star just conjures “let’s have a listen.” Perhaps because they almost share the surname of a certain Beatle or it just rolls off the tongue with gusto. Either way, this Atlanta band has evoked curiosity seeker and have made ’em fans since the band’s 2008 debut, All Y’all.  Gringo Star recently announced they will be releasing their new album On And On And Gone on June 2 by My Anxious Mouth.

The band’s core songwriting duo, the Furgiuele brothers, have been playing together since they were kids, born into a family with strong ties to Georgia music history. “Our grandad started out in radio in the ’40s and ’50s in Columbus, Ga.,” Nick explains earlier in a press release. “He was a huge promoter of R&B back when it was still super segregated, and he was playing black music and putting on shows with Little Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, a lot of Gospel shows. So we grew up hearing all these stories, listening to all this music. Our grandfather was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame posthumously. And my grandma—all her photo albums are like Jackie Wilson shirtless backstage, hanging out.”

Glide is premiering the contemplative “Stand and Turn Away,” which ruminates with a brooding openheartedness and orchestral flourishes akin to Deer Tick, Delta Spirit, and Blitzen Trapper. Gringo Star turns it down a nod here yet prove that less is more and can make winners out of the introspective material.

“Stand and Turn Away” was recorded, like almost all the album, starting with a live track of us all crammed together in a room with drums, percussion, piano, acoustic guitar, and then we added a few things. My wife Julia sings back up. I added a harmonica and an acoustic guitar solo to fill out a song about regret, longing, failing and keeping on keeping on,” adds Nick.
