Patrick Gymnasium

21499

Patrick Gym has been the home of the Vermont Catatmounts since 1963. It was named in honor of Roy L. Patrick, a longtime benefactor of the university and a former member of the school's board of trustees. It has undergone renovations twice to improve the facility for athletes and spectators. In 1982, new bleachers were added, improving the fans proximity to the court. In 1990, new lighting and a new wooden floor were installed.

Hosting the Best in Sports, Music and U.S. History
As well as being the home court of the University of Vermont basketball program, Patrick Gym is also the site for a wide variety of athletic and non-athletic events. The gym is just one part of the vast University of Vermont athletic complex. Other events that have been held at Patrick Gym include the 1976 US Olympic Boxing Trials (featuring Sugar Ray Leonard, and Michael and Leon Spinks), several NBA exhibition games, the 2004 Boston Celtics training camp, several concerts featuring the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Bob Hope, and guest speakers including former President Barack Obama.

Basketball's Best
Through the years some of basketball's best have played at Patrick Gym including Basketball Hall of Famers Julius Erving, John Havlicek, Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer and Sam Jones. Also, more recent stars such as Vin Baker, Herb Williams, Reggie Lewis and Chamique Holdsclaw have graced the Patrick Gym hardwood.

Among the great opposing coaches who have worked the sidelines at Patrick are Mike Krzyzewski, Rick Pitino, Jim Calhoun, UVM alum Rollie Massimino '56, and Tennessee legend Pat Summitt.

Patrick Gym has been the host of all rounds of America East Women's Basketball Championships five times. In 1992 and 1993, Patrick was the home of the conference women's basketball semifinals and championship games.

UVM has been the site of the very successful TD Bank Women's Basketball Classic since 1992, featuring such national powers as Alabama, Vanderbilt and Tennessee. During the 1996 classic, legendary Tennessee Coach Pat Summitt recorded her 600th career victory. The Lady Vols went on to win the National Championship that year.  In 2007, the legendary Kay Yow brought her NC State team to Patrick gym to compete in the TD Bank Classic.

Vermont also hosted the first round of the 1993 NCAA East Regionals as the No. 8-seeded Catamounts fell to No. 9 seed Rutgers. In 2002, Vermont also hosted a pair of games in the Women's National Invitational Tournament.

Patrick Gymnasium annually hosts the Division I boys' and girls' Vermont state championship semifinals and finals.

Making Vermont History
In 2004, UVM hosted the America East Men's Basketball Championship game at Patrick Gym in front of an enthusiastic sellout crowd. The game, aired on ESPN, was the first-ever nationally televised basketball game from the state of Vermont.

Team Personnel at Patrick Gym/Gutterson Fieldhouse: Buses and vans transporting all team personnel may be met by the UVM Transportation and Parking officers working the event and instructed to park in the loading zone adjacent to the north entrance of Gutterson Fieldhouse after they have dropped the team at the most convenient location.

All vehicles parking in this area are instructed verbally and by signs not to leave engines idling while waiting for their team. Bigger coach buses needing to warm up and idle are instructed to pull out of the loading zone when doing so. This loading zone can hold only two buses. If there are more than two buses and the Gutterson lot is not completely filled with spectator vehicles, the buses may park across the parking spaces in the lower levels of Gutterson. If the lot is expected to reach or exceed capacity, buses will be sent to park in the vacant CATS bus spaces near the watertower off of East Avenue.

Once the garage is full, vehicles will be directed to the Agricultural/Engineering lot off of Main Street and East Avenue. Fans exiting from the top and middle levels of the garage on the north end of the facility will only be allowed to exit to Main Street via University Heights.
