Gustav Mahler, arr. Cooke: Symphony No. 10

Though the venerable composer Gustav Mahler completed only sketches of his Symphony No. 10 before his death in 1911, composers and musicologists spent much of the 20th century reconstructing it and filling in the gaps. On the first half of this concert, Giancarlo Guerrero and the orchestra will demonstrate segments of the epic work to enlighten audiences with a fascinating exploration of the unique composition. After intermission, the Orchestra will perform Mahler's Tenth, perhaps his greatest symphony, in its entirety.

We end our season with Orff’s Carmina burana, in all its magnificent, carnal beauty. Giancarlo Guerrero programmed it — in its original form — to showcase the powerful forces of the Nashville Symphony and Chorus. On the first half of the program, our soloists in the Orff treat us to Alban Berg’s Seven Early Songs and the autobiographical Songs of the Wayfarer of Mahler, who compared his own life to “a traveling journeyman…wandering on in solitude.”

The Nashville Symphony's Accelerando initiative is an intensive music education program designed to prepare gifted young students of diverse ethnic backgrounds for pursuing music at the collegiate level and beyond. Accelerando seeks to create professional opportunities for musicians from ethnic communities that are underrepresented in today's orchestras by providing them with instruction, mentorship, performance experiences, and assistance with applying to music schools. With access to the resources of a major American orchestra, these students will be able to realize their full potential and will form the next generation of orchestra musicians.

Peter Otto, the Nashville Symphony’s new Walter Buchanan Sharp Concertmaster performs works for violin by Johannes Brahms, Krzysztof Penderecki, Ottorino Respighi, and Clara Schumann. Otto is a graduate of The Juilliard School and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Rostock, Germany. His honors include top prizes in the Max Rostal Competition in Berlin and the Kingsville Young Performers Competition in Texas. His teachers have included Christiane Hutcap, Vera Kramarova, and Lewis Kaplan, with other significant musical influences being Roman Nodel, Igor Ozim, and Felix Galimir.

SOUND BATHS AT THE SCHERMERHORN – Singer and sound healing artist, Davin Youngs is a "true Musical innovator" and "magician of the soul" who believes wholeheartedly in the transformational power of singing, voice and sound. His signature immersive sound healing experience, The RESET is his unique take on a "sound bath." He crafts each experience using improvisational singing, looping devices and sound healing instruments to create a sonic container for restoration, discovery and healing. He has brought The RESET to iconic spaces like Chicago's famed Orchestra Hall, the roof at Ace Hotel, Arcosanti in the Arizona desert and Finney Chapel at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

SILENT FILMS ARE BACK – Accompanied by the breathtaking, seat-shaking sounds of the Schermerhorn’s Martin Foundation Concert Organ performed by Peter Krasinski. This double-feature is anchored by the 1928 classic, The Cameraman. A hopelessly in love, clumsy man takes work as a motion-picture cameraman at MGM Studios in attempt to be close to the woman he desires. Also featuring the 1956 French film, The Red Balloon. Here, a red balloon with a mind of its own follows a little boy around the streets of Paris. Audiences will marvel at the legendary organist Peter Krasinski, who accompanies silent films like none other with his imaginative spirit and technical prowess.

“The Nomad Concerto broods, floats, and glimmers in its opening movement, ultimately alighting on something poignant for both orchestra and violin,” wrote the Philadelphia Inquirer upon the Mason Bates premiere with violinist Gil Shaham, for whom it was written. Giancarlo, Shaham, and the Nashville Symphony record it live, for posterity. Noted historian Michael Steinberg called Stravinsky’s score to The Firebird  “one of music’s great showpieces of orchestration—often astonishing and everywhere beautiful,” and a “remarkable tour-de-force" of the symphonic repertoire.

Drew and Ellie Holcomb are a husband and wife Americana duo from Nashville, TN. Shortly after their marriage in 2006, the couple began touring together with Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. The band has supported many national touring acts including The Avett Brothers, Don Henley, Darius Rucker and Willie Nelson.

Ellie is no longer a touring member of “The Neighbors,” and has found success in a solo career as a Christian singer/songwriter as a 3x Dove Award winner as well as a best selling author.

Drew Holcomb still tours nationally with Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors, and their most recent album, Strangers No More, is their most critically acclaimed release yet, notching a #1 Americana single, “Find Your People.”

Celebrate the 150th birthday of the iconic French composer Maurice Ravel with the Nashville Symphony.  A true classical music innovator, Ravel was praised for his orchestrations and for incorporating elements of modernism, baroque, neoclassicism, and even jazz into his music. Resident Conductor Nathan Aspinall leads the Orchestra through some of Ravel’s most significant works, including the Mother Goose Suite, Concerto for the Left Hand, La Valse, and his most-loved work, Bolero.

Conductor Nicholas Hersh’s inaugural Nashville Symphony series concert brings together a leading American composer and two classic works. Inspired by an entry in Beethoven’s journal, Carlos Simon composed Fate Now Conquers to evoke the unpredictability of fate through musical gestures. Ravel’s inspiration for his song cycle Shéhérazade came from the Sinbad episode from Arabian Nights, where the heroine/narrator spins out tale after tale to save her life. And Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, one of the most frequently performed symphonies in the world, is considered by critics to be one of the supreme achievements in the history of music.

A prodigious violinist, Itzhak Perlman enjoys superstar status rarely afforded by a classical musician. Beloved for his talent, charm, and humanitarian efforts, he is treasured by audiences throughout the world. The concert features Perlman and the Nashville Symphony, conducted by Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, performing Paul Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice; Ennio Morricone’s Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso; John Williams’ Themes from Far and Away, Sabrina, and Schindler’s List; Carlos Gardel’s Tango (Por Una Cabeza) from Scent of a Woman; and many more. 

COUNTERPOINT is a collaboration between pianist and composer Conrad Tao and choreographer and dancer Caleb Teicher. The duo explores the dichotomy of their different perspectives and artistic practices, expanding their individual expressive capacity through a collective experience. Harmonic, rhythmic, and theatrical counterpoint between the artists seeks to map out constellations linking their disparate traditions, driving the imagination and opening the heart. The stylistically diverse music of COUNTERPOINT includes the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Art Tatum’s demented stride piano, Arnold Schoenberg’s ironic take on the Viennese waltz, a delicate miniature from Tao and Teicher’s More Forever, and threading it all together, a work that bridges traditions, approaches, and styles—Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

Jazz meets classical as the multi-faceted pianist Aaron Diehl brings his trio for a rare performance of Mary Lou Williams’ Zodiac Suite, a suite of 12 pieces inspired by astrological signs and musicians born under them. Newcomer David Danzmayr opens his program with Golijov’s Sidereus, the composer’s depiction of Galileo’s celestial “Starry Messenger,” before delving into Schubert’s best-known work, the “Unfinished” symphony. The evening ends on a light note with Johann Strauss, Jr.’s Emperor Waltzes.

Back by popular demand, Kodo returns! In Japanese, the word “Kodo” holds a double meaning. It can be translated as “heartbeat,” the primal source of all rhythm or “children of the drum,” which reflects the group’s desire to play the drums with the simple heart of a child. No stranger to the stage, Kodo has given over 7,000 performances in more than 50 countries and regions on five continents. Audiences will be thrilled by Kodo’s rhythmic and intense sounds when it returns to the Schermerhorn.

Jasmine Barnes’ Four Winds Concertante features Principal Oboe Titus Underwood and three principal players from other leading U.S. orchestras. And Mendelssohn, a devout admirer of Bach, wrote his Fifth Symphony in commemoration of the Protestant Reformation, heavily quoting the Lutheran chorale A Mighty Fortress is Our God.

First China International Music Competition Gold Medalist Tony Siqi Yun (age 22) and 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner Oliver Herbert (age 27) have made important American orchestra debuts and are sought-after worldwide as soloists and recitalists. Giancarlo welcomes them on an all-Tchaikovsky program that also highlights two perennial orchestral favorites: the Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture, and Capriccio italien.

A Schermerhorn premiere engagement! Lettuce is an exceptional, genre-busting, six-member musical collective formed by four Berklee College of Music alumni. It begins with funk and tosses in strains of jazz, hip-hop, rock, psychedelia, soul, jam, go-go, and avant-garde. For this concert, Lettuce and the Nashville Symphony, conducted by Enrico Lopez-Yañez, will wow audiences with fully orchestrated funky, jazzy, and eclectic music.

La Vida Loca celebrates artists including Enrique Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Santana, Ricky Martin, and more. Conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez, world-renowned vocalists Ender Thomas and Jackie Mendez, and multi-GRAMMY® Award winners José Sibaja on trumpet and Luisito Quintero on percussion join the Nashville Symphony for a high-octane program featuring all-new symphonic arrangements by Lopez- Yañez and Sibaja.

Walter Buchanan Sharp Concertmaster Peter Otto takes center stage for the world premiere of a new concerto by rock artist and GRAMMY®-nominated classical composer Kip Winger. Giancarlo opens this all-American program with Barber’s playful and comedic overture. Copland’s third symphony—which incorporates his best-known work, Fanfare for the Common Man — was commissioned by the legendary conductor Serge Koussevitzky, a prolific catalyst for American music who continues to be an inspiration to Giancarlo.

Giancarlo Guerrero’s tenure as Music Director comes to a close with Mahler’s colossal “Symphony of a Thousand,” employing massive forces with eight vocal soloists, two mixed choirs and a boys’ choir, an over-sized orchestra, and a multitude of percussion. Written in two parts, the symphony is one of the largest-scale choral works in the classical concert repertoire and is unified by musical themes of redemption through the power of love. A fitting tribute to our Maestro and all he has brought to our orchestra and to our city.
