About the exhibition Beautiful Intruders:

One quarter of the plant species in Ohio are non-native, coming from other parts of our continent. Most of these plants create few problems in natural areas and grow together with the native plants to form diverse plant communities. In turn, these communities support wildlife by providing food, shelter, and breeding habitats.

Invasive species are aggressive non-natives that overtake the native plants and create monocultures, severely damaging the biological diversity of a natural area. Many of the problematic invasive plants were originally introduced for use in agriculture or as ornamental garden plants, prized for their hearty growth habit and beauty. Their eventual escape from the garden bounds unleashed a complex environmental challenge that is an ongoing struggle to manage.

The artwork shown here, features some of the most common invasives found in the park and surrounding area. Often hidden in plain sight, these “Beautiful Intruders” point to a need for our responsible stewardship as nature’s caretakers.

This exhibit opens on Sunday, July 28 and closes on Friday, August 30. Our gallery reception for this show is scheduled for Sunday, July 28 from 2 – 4 pm in Seiberling Gallery, 1403 W. Hines Hill Rd., Peninsula, OH 44264.
