The Whitman College Bookstore, located on the ground level of the Reid Campus Center at 280 Boyer Ave., is open. Whitman memorabilia is featured, from clothing to glassware to gift items. A wide selection of reading materials, including books by Whitman faculty, staff and alumni, is on display.

Class of 1970 and 1971 Campus Tour
4-5 p.m. | Meet in front of Reid Campus Center
Campus tour led by Admission Office tour guides. The tour will include visiting two of Whitman’s newest buildings—Cleveland Commons and Stanton Hall. Golf carts will be available for those needing assistance by advance reservation.

Class of 1970 and 1971 Reception with President Murray
6-7:30 p.m. | Side lawn of Reid Campus Center
Hearty Hors d'oeuvres and Wine Reception hosted by President Kathleen Murray on the side lawn of Reid Campus Center. The reception will take place out of doors so you may want a light jacket. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the Young Ballroom in the Reid Campus Center, 280 Boyer Avenue.

The Transformation of Whitman College with David Schmitz
10 a.m. | Maxey Auditorium
Professor David Schmitz will speak about the writing of The Transformation of Whitman College: From a Regional to a National Liberal Arts College, 1975-2015, the third volume of the history of Whitman College. David's comments will be followed by a Q&A session, plus time for him to sign your copy of the book (copies available for pre-order and on site at the bookstore).

Class of 1970 and 1971 Luncheon in the Young Ballroom, Reid Campus Center, 280 Boyer Ave. Come hear about the state of the College from Whitman’s 14th PresidentMenu: wild salmon or quinoa croquette salad, Meyer lemon tart.

Join John Markoff ’71 for a talk about his newest book, “Whole Earth: The Many Lives of Stewart Brand”; copies of the book are available for purchase in the Whitman Bookstore.

Beta Theta Pi Open House
2:30-4:30 p.m. | 925 Isaacs Ave.
Alumni and friends are invited to meet with classmates and to see progress and learn about the renovation of the house and studs-out remodel of the residential areas. Lewis Hale from the class of 1970 will be available for tours and to discuss the project. Snacks and cold drinks will be provided.

Whitman College and Northwest Archives
3-4 p.m. | Penrose Library
Visit the Whitman College and Northwest Archives to view materials on display from early college history as well as from the late 1960s through the early 1970s.  Do you have materials to donate?  The Whitman College and Northwest Archives welcomes donations of materials that relate to the history of the college and the Walla Walla region.  We are especially interested in materials that shed light on student life, including diaries, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, course-related materials, records of student organizations and activities and memoirs.  If you have such items in your possession, we would be happy to speak with you about making a permanent home for them in the college archives.  Please contact archivist, Ben Murphy, at 509-526-4731.  The archives are located on the ground level of Penrose Library.

Visit the Elbridge Hadley Stuart Room
4-5 p.m. | Penrose Library
In July 1972, construction began on an expanded Penrose Library. Originally built in 1957, the library needed room to grow and be updated. Perhaps the most interesting and enduring part of the 1972 expansion was the creation of the “Stuart Room”; more commonly known by many generations of Whitman students as the “Napoleon Room”.  We will take a tour of the room, interact with several items from Mr. Stuart’s vast collection of Napoleonana, and learn about the role Mr. Stuart and his family played in the development and construction of the 1972 expansion.

Menu: wild arugula salad, Locati Farm asparagus, comfit heirloom potatoes, choice of Upper Dry Creek leg of lamb, pan-roasted chicken or ratatouille, tiramisu. Inclement weather will move this event inside to the Young Ballroom.

Dinner on the patio of Cleveland Commons. The bar is hosted by the Whitman College Alumni Association. Menu: wild arugula salad, Locati Farm asparagus, comfit heirloom potatoes, choice of Upper Dry Creek leg of lamb, pan-roasted chicken or ratatouille, tiramisu. Inclement weather will move this event inside Cleveland Commons.

Class of 1970 and 1971 Visit to Marcus Whitman National Historic Site
9 a.m.-Noon| 328 Whitman Mission Road
Park Ranger Katie Kunkel-Patterson ’13 welcomes alumni to tour the grounds and the Great Grave, visit the museum and view a short film about the complex relationship of the Whitmans with the Cayuse people. Katie and other rangers will provide talks throughout the morning.

12:30-2 p.m. | Baker Center side lawn
Picnic on the side lawn of Baker Center, 364 Boyer Ave. with alumni from the Class of 2020. In the event of severe weather, the picnic will be moved to the Reid Campus Center, 280 Boyer Ave.   Attire: Casual. Menu: hamburgers, hot dogs, house-made vegan black bean patties, vegan potato salad, mixed green salad, sliced melon, house-made potato chips, house-made brownies or cookies.

Class of 1970 and 1971 Discussion about Mission Site Visit
2-3 p.m.| Reid Side Lawn
Join Rogers Miles, retired Assistant Professor of Religion, for a discussion about the context in which the Whitmans are viewed today. Rogers Miles taught “The Secularization of Whitman College” and has participated in the Fort Walla Walla Museum’s living history museum as Cushing Eells, the founder of Whitman College. Inclement weather will move this event to Kimball Theater in the Hunter Conservatory.

Class of 1970 and 1971 Perspectives on U.S. Foreign Policy
3:30-4:30 p.m.| Olin Hall; outdoor location TBD
Join three retired Foreign Service Officers to discuss the road ahead for US foreign policy. This session aims to foster wide-ranging discussion on foreign policy approaches that would best serve American interests as we move into this century’s third decade — and beyond. Panelists include Gary Robbins ’71, Clifford Brown ’72 and Ryan Crocker ’71.

  Wine Valley Golf Club, 176 Wine Valley Road

Join your classmates for an evening of revelry and fantastic views. Directions: Wine Valley is located 7 miles West of Downtown Walla Walla off Highway 12. Turn North on Frenchtown Rd. (Mile Post 329), 1/2 mile from the highway turn left at Wine Valley Rd. Menu: Choice of tri-tip steak, chicken marinated in lemon & fresh herbs, or salmon fillet, farmstead salad, grilled seasonal vegetables, grilled garlic bread. Wine and beer available for purchase.

If you have special dietary needs we will do our best to accommodate you; the reunion registration form is where you will report that information. If you have mobility issues, please contact Nancy Mitchell at 509-527-5952. A golf cart shuttle will be available for on-campus events on a pre-arranged basis.

Golf

Call your friends and arrange a foursome to play at one of the area's fine golf courses. Golf at Veterans Memorial Golf Course, 201 E. Rees.  Or try Walla Walla's newest golf course, Wine Valley Golf Club, located on Highway 12 between Walla Walla and Lowden.

Security and Emergency Procedures
Welcome back to Whitman College.  Our intention is to provide you with a safe and enjoyable visit.  If you need assistance during your visit on campus, you may contact Campus Security at 590-527-5777 or Environmental Health and Safety at (509) 527-5966.  For police, fire or medical emergencies, please call 911.

If you feel there is an emergency of a medical nature or a threat to your personal safety, you should feel empowered to initiate emergency response by calling 911.  You may call 911 from any campus phone or from the "blue light" phones at outdoor locations around campus. To call 911 from the "blue light" phones simply push the large red button and wait for a dispatcher to answer.

During an emergency:

  • Call 911
  • Stay calm
  • Use common sense
  • Follow any directions you are given until assistance arrives
  • If you are instructed to evacuate a building, please evacuate promptly
  • If you are instructed to "shelter in place", please stay inside the building and follow the direction of college staff members
