Get inspired and draw like you've always wanted! This class will encourage you to see the world and your work with new eyes. Students will work with a variety of drawing tools such as pencils, conte crayons, markers, felt tip pens, pastels, and willow charcoal to learn key techniques and concepts that will develop your appreciation and skills in non-representational drawing. The course will pull inspiration from an eclectic array of sources, including modern artists (Klee, Miro, and Kandinsky), YouTube videos, and avant garde film. Instructor: David Verba

Advanced Cartooning

Do you know a kid or teen who loves comics and cartoons? In Advanced Cartooning, we’ll explore the more technical side of this medium, both visually and conceptually. We will examine a variety of concepts, such as narrative visual storytelling, character design, world building, story circles AKA the Hero’s Journey, basic anatomy, layout/composition, script writing techniques, and perspective, as well as the history of cartooning and comics, with emphasis on Cleveland’s important role in the legacy. Following along with demonstrations and discussions, students will learn professional standards and practices. Working independently, students will create their own original comic and receive individual feedback throughout the process. Beginning Painting

In this introductory painting course, students will learn the fundamental techniques and processes of painting with acrylic paint. Class projects will target basic painting principles and guide students to develop a better understanding of tools and materials, acrylic paint and mediums, basic color theory, and two-dimensional design concepts. In this introductory sculptural course, students will have the opportunity to learn the art of creating sculptural forms using wire, plaster, and mixed media assemblage. Learn essential three-dimensional design principles to solve spatial challenges, covering techniques such as carving, assembling, and modeling. Delve into the core aspects of sculpture, from materials and processes to context, form, scale, structure, and space. Cartooning 101

Grades 5-8. This studio course for young, aspiring cartoonists is designed to introduce and develop a diverse set of skills around this eclectic medium. We will create an original comic book or strip and introduce a variety of concepts, such as narrative visual storytelling, character design, world building, story circles AKA the Hero’s Journey, basic cartoon anatomy, layout/composition, and perspective. While the class is primarily a studio course, lectures will introduce students to the nature and history of cartooning – with a specific focus on Cleveland’s influential cartooning and comics professionals. Clay On and Off the Wheel

The goal of this course is to explore the endless possibilities in working with clay both on and off the pottery wheel. Together we will go over basic to advanced techniques to achieve your artistic goals. By the end of the course students will have a complex understanding of how to manipulate clay on and off the wheel at all different stages of the making process. Creative Clay Studio

Grades 6-12. Young artists are welcome in the clay studio at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Explore your imagination by creating sculpture and pottery through the use of this tactile material. You will learn the skills of hand-building and working on the potter's wheel as you develop and translate your ideas into three-dimensional works of art. You will finish off your creations with high temperature (2350° F) glazes that will be fired off in our professional level kilns. High school students have the opportunity to develop their portfolios for high school or college admission. Be prepared to get messy! Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear (old t-shirts and sneakers are best; no open-toed shoes). All skill levels are welcome. Instructor: Elly Arvizu + Wes Cunningham

Drawing the Figure

Beginners and experienced artists welcome in this class exploring dry media like charcoal, graphite, and chalk pastel to draw the human figure. The techniques of gesture, contour, value, rendering, measurement, and composition will be discussed, with explanations on materials and processes, as well as demonstrations on how to draw the figure every step of the way. Students will be working with human anatomy of the full figure including portrait features. Topics will focus primarily on traditional approaches to drawing with additional consideration for contemporary methods.
