About Gozu

An expansive, hard-hitting, metal outfit, Boston's Gozu draw upon a deep well of influences, touching upon '60s psychedelia, fuzz-drenched '70s stoner riffs, and '90s grunge. Formed in 2007 by vocalist/guitarist Marc Gaffney, guitarist Doug Sherman, and drummer Barry Spillberg, Gozu previewed their hard-to-pin-down amalgam of groove metal and stoner rock with a 2008 seven-track EP, before adding bassist Jay Cannava to the fold. The quartet was then approached by Detroit-based independent Small Stone Records and got to work on its debut album, Locust Season, released in mid-2010. Fury of a Patient Man followed in 2013, during which time Cannava left, replaced by Joe Grotto. Three years later, they returned with the full-length, Revival, which found them digging even deeper into their organic, psych-soaked aesthetic. In 2018, they signed with Metal Blade and delivered Equilibrium. Recorded in the wake of the death of Gaffney's father, the album showcased an emotive mix of headbanging anthems and more hypnotic fare. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
