Wang selected as dean of UTA Libraries
The University of Texas at Arlington has selected Zheng (John) Wang as the next dean of UTA Libraries. Wang currently serves as the dean of Meriam Library at California State University, Chico.
“John brings to the role a focus on data-driven decision-making and strategic leadership for UTA Libraries,” said Tamara L. Brown, UTA provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “He is a creative, energetic and highly motivated team-builder who excels at planning and managing change.”
Wang previously served as an associate university librarian at the University of Notre Dame. During his tenure, he enabled digital, technological and service transformations for the libraries that aligned with the university’s educational and research missions. He led the relaunch of the libraries’ grant management system, which implemented staff development and new processes for the libraries to secure grant funding after a 25-year hiatus.
At Meriam Library, Wang guided innovative service model discussions to increase the impacts of his librarians and the library overall. He supervised the launch of new programs and the creation of a new library identity and branding. Additionally, he created new fundraising opportunities, securing a $1 million endowment, the most significant gift in the library’s history.
“As incoming dean, my passion lies in fostering strong collaborations with students and faculty as we work together to advance the University’s mission of excellence in education and research,” Wang said. “I want to nurture UTA’s upward trajectory, empowering the academic community and shaping a brighter future for all."
Wang has published on integrating emerging technologies with library services and project management within libraries. His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in economics from Beijing Union University and two master’s degrees in library and information science from Queens College and City University of New York. He also holds a master’s in information systems from Pace University. He has obtained certifications in search engine optimization from the University of British Columbia and machine learning from Stanford University.
Wang is expected to assume his role at UTA on October 1.
