Rustici Software, a softwarre company that helps firms conform to e-learning standards, did not set out to make a billion dollars.

Founder Mike Rustici "wanted to build a place we want to go to on Monday mornings."

When Rustici was founded in 2002, the company focused on using high-performing, happy employees to create innovative solutions.

"The only asset we have as a software company is our people and their innovation," Rustici said. "No one comes up with a good idea after sitting for 80 hours at a computer." Thus, Rustici thought of 'Jenafits,' a personal concierge for employees.

Jen, who can do everything from buy a Mother's Day card to babysit children, works toward keeping employees happy.

Although it may seem irrational to provide so many services to employees, Rustici emphasizes the importance of the growth of the company as a marathon, not a sprint. "If we can do some simple things to remove the distractions from everyday life, we will clear up just enough headspace to make innovation happen ... if we can just remove some of that stress, we can have a very positive effect down the road," Rustici said.

With the help of an open-door policy, Rustici Software encourages all employees to add to the success of the company. Employees know the best idea always wins. Whether the idea came from one of the partners or one of the employees, Rustici and his partner, Tim Martin, listen to each idea. From thoughts on the direction of the company to the best toilet paper for the bathrooms, suggestions, concerns and debate are encouraged.

The feeling of being heard and appreciated seems to be a hit with the employees at Rustici Software, with only four employees voluntarily leaving since the company's inception. As one employee said, "Innovation, change and new ideas are not only valued but encouraged daily. It's a truly collaborative environment where everyone works together for success."

The company collaborates inside the office, but also within the community, volunteering at events such as Hack Nashville and CoderFaire.

Job flexibility and trust within the company make volunteering, staying home with a sick child and taking time off for a vacation possible. "Rustici encourages all of us to work to live, not live to work," said an employee.

The company's chili cookouts, paintball fights and murder mystery parties encourage Rustici Software employees to work hard, to work fast, to make mistakes and to be proud of their involvement in the company's success. As Rustici said, "If you force people to do something, they will just do what they're told. If you inspire people to do something, they will run through a brick wall for you."

Employees celebrate Halloween at Rustici Software.
