Meet Phoebe Ngo and Tall Doan who pursued their MBA while embracing the joys and challenges of being new parents 🎓 "Being pregnant while studying abroad was challenging, but we were fortunate to receive immense kindness and support from our cohort and the program management team. Their encouragement made this journey truly memorable and special for us, and we are endlessly grateful. We came to learn to be future business leaders, but we also gained a big family and transitioned into parenthood." Congratulations to all our MBA students graduating this month! We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you! 🎉 #USYD #USYDGraduation #USYDAlumni The University of Sydney Business School

What is Australia’s deadliest mental illness? You might be surprised to learn the answer is anorexia nervosa. Increasing levels of mental illness related to eating disorders, come at a time of proliferation of mobile devices, social media, young people spending so much time online, and there are some very disturbing and harmful environments out there. How do we think through ways of dealing with that? And how do we equip parents to deal with that? On The Solutionists with Mark Scott, Dr Sarah Maguire from the Charles Perkins Centre InsideOut Institute for Eating Disorders explains what everyone should know about eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating, which affect more than one million Australians. In this episode we dig into the challenges and solutions about eating disorders and it’s essential listening for parents in particular. Latest University of Sydney research found almost a quarter of young people aged 12 to 17 use WhatsApp daily. One in two are daily Snapchat users. Instagram and YouTube are the most frequently used platforms, used daily by 64% and 56% of young people respectively. Social media and the internet do present risks to young people, but age verification for social media would impact all of us. University of Sydney researchers from Media and Communications investigate the efficacy and risks of age verification checking technologies and whether there are better approaches to mitigating online harms affecting young people. Vice-Chancellor and President Mark Scott wrote in The Australian today about the need for university protests to meet a balance of free speech and safety.
As campus protests continue worldwide, so does an intense debate about free speech. Today, I wrote in The Australian about the need for university protests to meet a balance of free speech and safety. At the University of Sydney, we have been clear. Our overriding priorities are to ensure the safety of our community, ensure our campus remains peaceful and respectful, and that university activities continue uninterrupted. In line with our Charter of Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom, we recognise peaceful protest is a legitimate expression of free speech. Political speech can be deeply uncomfortable – but we will not tolerate it crossing over into racism, threats to safety, hate speech, intimidation, bullying or unlawful harassment on our campuses. As universities have done throughout history, we will strive to create a respectful environment of good faith at Sydney, allowing space for diverse perspectives and peaceful protest. https://lnkd.in/gVYbHaEb
