Walker Leadership Scholars Names Newest Members

The Walker Leadership Scholars program has named its two newest scholars, Jordan A. Jones and Shannon Leighton, both with the Class of 2023.

Each year, the Walker Leadership Advisory Committee selects two students through a competitive application and interview process. These students have the opportunity to accelerate their leadership development through experiential learning and mentorship. They grow their abilities to contribute to the profession of pharmacy and transform health care with activities such as lunch and learns with pharmacy leaders, attendance at national meetings and exposure to policy, advocacy and legislative processes.

Jones is from Blythewood, South Carolina, and earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences from Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky.  She is interested in clinical pharmacy and is currently exploring different specialties, with plans to pursue residency.

Leighton graduated from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, with her degree in biomedical sciences. She is interested in specializing in clinical pharmacy, and also plans to seek a residency after graduation, perhaps in ambulatory care or infectious diseases. She also wants to gain more experience in policy.

We have already had the chance to talk with some incredible people in the world of pharmacy ... We are learning about ourselves as leaders and honing our skills.

Jordan A. Jones  Pharm.D. Candidate

Both Jones and Leighton are greatly honored to be selected as Walker Leadership Scholars.  “When you enter pharmacy school, you want to be involved and do things that matter,” says Leighton. “This acknowledges that our peers recognize the effort, and it sets you up to be a better leader.”

Jones appreciates the networking opportunities that come with being a Walker Leader Scholar. “We have already had the chance to talk with some incredible people in the world of pharmacy,” she notes, including Walker Leadership Scholars founder Donna Walker. “We are learning about ourselves as leaders and honing our skills through our conversations with these leaders."
