Wells helps lead Mavs to sweep of Oral Roberts

Graduate libero named to all-tournament team.

TULSA, Okla. --- The UT Arlington volleyball team (7-2) fought off Oral Roberts in a close second set to ultimately produce a 25-21, 25-23, 25-11 win inside the Reynolds Center to close out the Tulsa Invitational on Saturday.

Alli Wells, who registered a match-high 24 digs along with a career-best six assists, was named to the Tulsa Invitational all-tournament team. Brianna Ford etched her third consecutive double-double with a match-high 12 kills along with 12 digs. Jalie Tritt produced 11 kills for the fifth double-digit effort of her sophomore campaign.

Mollie Blank led all players with 31 assists while adding seven digs and a team-high three blocks. Alyssa Duran chipped in 11 digs and a team-best two aces. Briana Brown finished fourth on the team with seven kills while adding four digs. Kortney Puckett contributed three blocks while Alexis Bull had four kills and two blocks. In addition to Bull, fellow freshman Evyn Snook tallied four digs.

In the opening set, Brown made an impact at crucial moments. After a back-and-forth set saw Oral Roberts take a 19-18 lead, the senior outside hitter smashed a pair of kills to start a run in which UTA scored three straight and seven of the final nine. After ORU responded by tying it at 21 apiece, Brown added another termination before Bull and Ford teamed up for the set-winning block to punctuate a 4-0 spurt to close the frame.

The Mavs were down again in the second set but used a 6-0 run to take a 23-20 lead with Puckett leading the team on serve. Despite Oral Roberts answering with three out of the next four points, Ford sent down the winner for a two-set lead.

UTA continued the momentum in a dominant final set, scoring seven straight early for a 9-2 lead. A short time later, they registered 10 straight points while nearly closing the match on an 11-0 run. Oral Roberts ended up fighting off a pair of match points before a service error did them in on the clinching point.

MILESTONE WATCH
With her double-double, Ford is now one of 22 players in program history with 30 in a career. It was also her fourth of the season as the senior outside hitter also tied Ashley Van Antwerp (927, 2002-05) for 23rd place on the program's career kills list.

Blank, meanwhile, used her 31 assists to surpass Heidi Christensen (1,564, 1993-94) for 11th place on the program's career list. The senior setter now has 1,571.

Wells also continued to climb toward 2,000 career digs as the graduate libero pushed her all-time total to 1,769. After finishing with four digs in the season opener, she has reeled off eight straight with at least 12, including 20+ in three of the past four. In fact, with her big weekend, she also now has 41 career outings with at least 20.

Head coach J.T. Wenger picked up his 98th career win with the victory as he looks to become the sixth head coach in program history to reach the century mark.
