Welcome!
You've found the focal point on campus for intellectual property (IP) management, technology commercialization, applied-research collaborations with industry, faculty entrepreneurship – UMSL's technology transfer office (aka: TTO) is the " Office of IP Management & Commercialization."
We help UMSL faculty, staff, and students through the process of identifying, analyzing, protecting, marketing, and potentially licensing your research discoveries, invention, and creative and digital works.
How University Research & Creativity Drives Innovation
- Universities compete for external and internal funding to conduct critical research. In some cases, research is conducted without grant funding.
- University faculty and students make groundbreaking discoveries in the lab, develop creative works, and/or work with compilations of digital images.
- University technology transfer offices protect such intellectual property (IP) through patents, copyrights, and/or trademarks.
- University technology transfer offices then help transfer the rights to use these ideas to businesses and entrepreneurs and startups.
- Businesses, entrepreneurs and startups develop the ideas into products that create jobs and help improve quality of life for all Americans.
So, why do universities get involved in tech transfer? Take a look at this quick video:

National Academy of Inventors ® (NAI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit member organization comprising U.S. and international universities, and governmental and non-profit research institutions. Founded in 2010, the NAI:
- Recognizes and encourages inventors who have a patent issued from the United States Patent and Trademark Office
- Enhances the visibility of university and non-profit research institute technology and academic innovation
- Encourages the disclosure of intellectual property
- Educates and mentors innovative students
- Encourages the translation of the inventions of its members to benefit society
Membership in the National Academy of Inventors is available through local university and non-profit research institute chapters only. To join the NAI, an inventor must be affiliated with an Institutional Member and be a named inventor on one or more patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) -- UMSL is a Charter Institutional Member of the NAI.
