APPROPRIATIONS UPDATE

The Senate is expected to take up four bills for vote this Thursday before leaving for August recess: Defense, Labor-HHS-Education, Energy-Water and Financial Services. Senate appropriators are still working to find a bipartisan agreement on the Department of Homeland Security funding measure. The House of Representatives left town last week to begin its recess and is set to return in early September.

BIPARTISAN TAX BILL EXPECTED FOR VOTE THIS WEEK

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) filed cloture Monday evening on a bipartisan tax package that includes expanding the Child Tax Credit and relief concerning tax deductions related to domestic research and experimental costs, among other family and business provisions. The cloture vote would end debate and set up a full vote on the legislation. The procedural vote is expected to take place later this week. The House passed the $79 billion bill in January with bipartisan support, but its fate in the Senate is unclear due to Republican concerns with certain provisions.
