Ellie Young candlelight vigil held by UTHSC student body
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - The memory of Ellie Young, a medical student who was murdered last weekend at Shelby Farms, is being kept by her fellow medical students at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Students and faculty in the College of Medicine met after sunset Sunday night in the Historic Quadrangle at the center of campus. Some of her classmates and closest friends shared their memories of Ellie at the vigil.
“Nothing ever got her down. She was so positive,” says Macey Daniel. She met Ellie at orientation where they became instant friends and ‘study buddies’. “She would’ve been the most incredible physician.”
The speakers at tonight’s vigil expressed how the 22-year-old from Henning lifted their spirits during grueling exam weeks.
“I know she was distressed. Every medical student is. But she never really showed it,” says Dr. David LaVelle, one of Ellie’s instructors at UTHSC. “Ellie had a terrific impact on other people, mainly as a person that encouraged them and uplifted their spirits.”
At the vigil, Daniel shared that the memorial fund for Ellie’s family has raised over $50,000 in just a week.
