Amanda Wilford, MBA Director at SUUDespite the troublesome year that many schools have experienced, Southern Utah University’s Master of Business Administration has experienced another year of growth in both numbers and excellence. The program has more than doubled in size and welcomed a new director, Dr. Amanda Wilford.

Since the MBA degree was launched, the program has grown with unprecedented speed, excelling above and beyond as the program has also become more accessible and affordable to MBA students both online and in person. In early 2020, SUU’s MBA program was ranked among the top programs in the country by U.S. News and World Report, as well as the second-lowest in the west for student debt.

In the summer of 2020, the program welcomed its new director, Dr. Amanda Wilford. Originally from Star Valley, Wyoming, Dr. Wilford is an SUU graduate who fell in love with the university during her time as an undergraduate student. Wilford earned her MBA at Purdue University.

“It’s an entirely different time period,” Dr. Wilford said. “But it’s been great to be back with colleagues. I love the business school and the people I get to work with every day.”

Dr. Wilford’s interest in business began in high school, where she decided to follow a track in accounting. Though she wondered if accounting was the right path for her, she fell in love with accounting during her graduate program and took a job as an accountant in Las Vegas, where she found a passion for training and consulting, sparking her interest in academia.

Dr. Wilford earned her Ph.D. at the University of Maryland with a focus in accounting and taught in various MBA programs at IE Business School in Madrid until early 2020. After moving back to the states, Dr. Wilford decided to come back to SUU and took over as the director of the MBA program.

“We have more than doubled the size of the MBA program, and one of the things we’re really interested in moving forward is outreach,” Dr. Wilford said. “We have an excellent faculty here and they’re willing to work with the students and they want to provide them with as much support as they need to help them to be successful. I’d like to do virtual meetups with students and members of the community related to different topics.”

SUU’s Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business produces talented business leaders prepared with the essential skills and knowledge to effectively lead organizations in today’s increasingly turbulent environment. The MBA program can be completed in just one year by full-time students or can be completed at the student’s preferred pace. It can be completed online, in-person, or in whatever combination is most convenient for students, and the program boasts a 96% employment rate for graduates.
